If your BMW is prewired for phone, and you install a new generation Bluetooth module, like we sell, it is unlikely that you will need to have your car coded. THIS MEANS THEIR IS NO RUNNING OF WIRES OR COMPLICATED INSTALLATION STEPS. The installation is very simple and straight forward. Pus our Bluetooth kits come with detailed BMW service manual documentation that you can follow yourself or have any competent dealer or installer perform.
In the E90, start your installation by removing the bottom trunk liner by lifting straight up. Once removed you will find bundle of wires as shown below. These wires are the Bluetooth module power connection, bluetooth antenna connection and fiber optic audio connection. If you currently have BMW assist, these wires will be connected to the BMW assist module. Simple disconnect the assist module and connect up the Bluetooth module that comes as part of our kit. E60 and E63 wires are located on the LEFT side of the trunk liner trim.
Although the Bluetooth Kits come with detailed step by step instructions for installing both the pairing button and eject box, the below quick pictorial guide will give you a good idea about the installation in the BMW.

but just hide the button under the cupholders. The reason people use the pairing button is that the E46 Eject box location is in place of the cup holders. E46 owners who do not care about the cupholders prefer the Eject box install. As a side note: some X39, X5 and other BMW bluetooth installers prefer the pairing button install in as apposed to the

Please let us know what the year and model of BMW you plan on installing this kit in and we will get you the proper documentation. The Eject box allows you to add optional snap in adapters that are specific to your Bluetooth phone. Kits do not come with SES jumper plugs P/N 84 11 0 018 038, or microphones, as the assist cars ALREADY have these parts in place.
Retrofitting Bluetooth is actually easier than installing Bluetooth in a car without BMW assist. Just follow the not normal installation directions, except you have to remove the BMW assist module and plug in the Bluetooth module in its place. Alternatively, you do not even have remove the assist module, and can just tape the Bluetooth module on top of the assist module. If later you ever need BMW assist, you can just go back in the trunk and move the wires back to the assist module. It take about 30 to 40 min to complete, without rushing.
Bluetooth antenna connector. (the Bluetooth antenna is typically preinstalled in the 3 series and 5 series although the kit comes with one just in case), and connect it to the Bluetooth ULF module (pictured on top). If installing in an X5, X3 or Z4 and the Bluetooth antenna is not preinstalled; find a suitable location for your Bluetooth antenna using the FAKRA jumper wire included in this kit to connect the Bluetooth module to the Bluetooth antenna.
NOTE: When converting from BMW Assist to BMW Bluetooth you must install the pairing button or eject box as described in the following documentation. The steering wheel "face" button is only for activating voice recognition and does not function as a pairing button.

You can pair upto 4 phones to the BMW System at any time and the Bluetooth function will automatically detect your phone when you start the car. Once you decide to make a phone call, you can use the phone directory on the Radio navigation display or use the pairing button to activate voice dialing.
The Passengers side ash tray mounting location is a perfect spot because of it's stealth location. You will only see the BMW Pairing button, when the ash tray panel is open. Plus there will be no noticeable indication that you have any non-factory Z8 part in your car aside from the BMW button in the ashtray. Although the functional difference will be that you now have a working phone system in the car using your Bluetooth phone even while the phone is still in your pocket! In addition, the kit consists of BMW factory parts and equipment and it functions exactly as your original CPT8000 phone operates and functions.
Once you have installed your Bluetooth system, Operation of the unit is the same as other BMWs. To pair the phone, press and hold the pairing button with the ignition off. With the button still held down, turn the key to the first position. After 3 seconds let go of the button and the red light above the phone icon will flash to indicate you are in pairing mode. Use your Bluetooth phone to initiate pairing and input the pairing code passkey from the Bluetooth module into the phone.
Mount the Bluetooth pairing button in a suitable location. The passengers side ash tray is a great option as it is stealth, easy access and very functional. Plus, the best idea about using the ash tray is that it is a cheap replacement if you destroy it during the modification. You can use the
Mount the ULF module to the Bracket. You might need to modify the holes slightly. Once you connect the Bluetooth antenna wire and the 54 pin connector of Z8 Bluetooth retrofit harness to the ULF module, connect the DB25 connectors together, as shown below the ULF module in the image below.
The below information details HOW to get your BMW that was made prior to dates above to show MP3 ID3 Audiotext (Band, Song Title, Album) and support for track and directory sorting using this new CD Changer. In addition to MP3 audiotext, when you upgrade the radio to the new generation radio you also get the added support for BMW Sirius Satellite radio receiver, and Auxiliary input.
IF your BMW was equipped with DSP audio system, you will also need to change the audio input connection from the single wire direct from CD changer to DSP amp to the new audio connector. This is the same change that is required to support BMW Sirius satellite radio.
Locate the BMW radio in the trunk area, and locate the radio on the back left side just behind the CD changer in the photo below. Remove the one 10 mm nut, to remove and replace the radio! Then remove and replace the CD Changer. If equipped with DSP audio system, use the 6 wire CD input cable to connect to the trunk radio. This step is required for MP3 audiotext AND Sirius Satellite radio support as BMW no longer uses the SPDIF audio input cable (single wire to DSP) for DSP in the new generation radios.
The CD changer will PLAY MP3s, and WMA files in ALL years of the 3 series E46, 5 series E39, X5, X3. Z8, Z4 AND E38 7 series from 99-01 (Note: E38 7 series does not fit in the proper CD location as the shape is different. The below pictures are installed in my 2001 7 series E38 with new Gen radio retrofit) The installation is simple and quick, and the changer is the exact same size and uses the same mounting brackets (excluding the E38 which has a larger changer). In order to VIEW the MP3 audiotext the radio must be a newer version BMW radio. I do not know all of the radio part numbers that are supported, but the following part numbers of the radios have been reported to fully support MP3 audiotext (please let us know if your radio supports Audiotext so that we can update this info) :
As of Feb 2006, is now offering the factory installed option of an Original BMW CD changer that will play MP3s, and WMA files on CD-Rs and CD-RWs. This CD Changer is designed to work with cars with and without navigation. The below documentation will feature navigation information, although the basic functionality and installation is the same. This changer supports the feature of showing ID3 text from the MP3 audio files on your navigation screen or radio display. If you have a 3 series E46, 5 series E39, X5, X3. Z8, Z4 this CD changer is plug and play. We are not quite sure what manufacture dates of each BMW supports the display of ID3 audiotext (see below), but know for sure the 2006 model years all do! In all years listed below your BMW will be able to play MP3s perfectly, and if desired, you can update your radio to support the viewing of MP3 ID3 audiotext.
CD changer works in all BMWs with standard 3 pin and 6 pin audio input connector. Will work with BMWs equipped with DSP IF they were built after 09/01 and do not use the SPDIF cable from CD changer to DSP amp. BMW no longer uses this SPDIF cable in order to support the Sirius radio audio inputs.
BELOW ARE DETAILS ON THE BMW CD CHANGER THAT PLAYS MP3s in the 3 Series E46, 5 Series E39, X5, X3, Z4, Z8, and 7 Series E38 (although not located in factory CD changer location in E38). Don't waste your time with other CD changers that may or may not work.
Although I have not tried it, I understand that you can get Itunes files to show the ID3 if configured correctly. I have yet to try it as I do not have any Itunes files. Set your import preference to MP3 at 192kbps and your burn settings to "MP3 CD." In order to see the ID3 audiotext properly you have to make sure that you select "Convert ID3 Tags" under the "Advanced" menu and change to version 1.x. The BMW system only recognizes ID3 version 1 tags. I think the Itunes default is version 2.x
The installation is very simple and quick. Using the BMW adapter harness, connect the round pin adapter in the car harness to the Round to square pin adapter
BMW is now offering the factory installed option of an Original BMW CD changer that will play MP3s, and WMA files on CD-Rs and CD-RWs, although they are not available for sale from US Dealers yet. We have imported a handful of these changers for sale in the US, and are offering them for sale at a reasonable price
Installation is simple in the X5. Simply remove the 4 10mm nuts around the CD changer (if present) and the 4 screws on the side of the bracket once removed. Disconnect the 3 pin and the 6 pin connector and replace on the new changer.
To Determine what software and hardware you have On the Main screen of your display, choose the "settings" selection. on the top right you will see the Computer version and software version: See image above SW 2-1/81. This means 2 = MKII ; 1 = single display (Not split screen) 81 = Software version 81, or BMW Navigation V 21 CD (or greater)

Although the Bluetooth Kits come with detailed step by step instructions for installing both the pairing button and eject box, the below quick pictorial guide will give you a good idea about the installation in the BMW E46.
The below image shows the SES jumper plug connected properly, and shows how to connect the two BLACK purple FAKRA SMB antenna wires together so that your BMW Bluetooth eject box wiring will connect the eject box to the roof mount antenna (not required in pairing button installation) You will also find one small 3 pin connector in the same location for the cellular booster. If you decide to install this optional piece, the three pin connector provides the module power.
If installing the BMW Bluetooth eject box most E46 owners use the E46 Shark Fin Antenna. P/N 84-50-0-146-776 $50 with Rubber mounting gasket P/N 84-50-0-146-775 $5, if not already installed
Step 2) Connect the Bluetooth antenna. In E46s made after 03/02 the Bluetooth antenna wiring has already been run from the trunk area to the center console as part of the phone prewiring. If your E46 was equipped with BMW assist, you may actually already have the Bluetooth antenna pre installed. If your BMW was built before 03/02 BMW recommends placing the antenna on the
If you are replacing the BMW assist module your car already is equipped with the Bluetooth ULF mounting bracket. You will just need to remove the assist module and mount the Bluetooth module to the same bracket. Remove the 4 8mm bolts and the Assist module will come right out
In order to complete the Bluetooth Eject box install you will need to get the following parts, BMW E46 Center console Frame color of choice and the
All North American BMWs even without BMW phone currently are already prewired for phone. You can verify by finding the Prewired for BMW Cellular phone in the trunk area. Prewiring consists of wiring for all telephone equipment, plus coding for phone and voice recognition. If your BMW is prewired for phone, and you install a new generation Bluetooth module, like we sell, it is unlikely that you will need to have your car coded.
For those of you who do not want to loose your cupholders, it is best to stick with the E46 pairing button install (right picture). The pairing button can be mounted in any location you choose, or hidden under the cupholders. Either the pairing button or Eject box with pairing button is required for BMW bluetooth as the steering wheel button can not pair phones, only activate voice recognition and dial.
If your BMW E46 came equipped with BMW assist you already have the ULF/TCU interchangeable bracket 84 13 6 924 553, Bolt w/ washer 07 11 9 902 932, Hex nut 63 21 1 371 401 and Clip nut 61 13 1 372 033 that can be reused for your installation. These brackets and hardware are also available from your dealer if you do not currently have assist.
Connect the 54 pin connector to one end of the ULF module (using the provided 26 pin to 54 pin adapter if e46 was built before 03/02), and the cream/purple colored Bluetooth antenna wire to the the other end of the ULF module. PLEASE NOTE: I have heard from some customers that they had TWO Cream colored antenna wires. Make sure that you choose the Cream/Purple as shown in the below image.
Step 4) Next, verify that you have a BMW microphone installed. If you currently have BMW phone or BMW assist currently, the mic will already be installed. If not equipped with either, you can
Please also note that E46 convertibles manufactured AFTER 09/03 have a new microphone location which is on top of the steering column. The BMW part number is P/N 84 31 6 937 391 ~ $45 dealer part (convertibles built AFTER 09/03 only). So far most all customers who have done the E46 convertible installation with a 09/03 or newer car, have the convertible microphone already installed from the factory.
Next locate the Black (w/ white lever) 54 pin phone plug on your BMWs phone wiring harness (OR BLACK 26 pin plug in E46s built prior to 03/02 and connect included 26 pin to 54 pin adapter harness). This plug is the same plug that was originally connected to the assist module. If your car was not equipped with BMW assist it will typically be wrapped in a cloth bag over the drivers side rear wheel well.
or P/N 84 11 0 018 038 ~ $10.00. If an SES module is connected to the Blue plug for voice recognition, you can remove the module and replace with the jumper plug as well. The Bluetooth module has built in Voice recognition and does not need this separate module.
