Coil over suspensions consist of a spring mounted on the strut or shock body. The springs sit or are located by seats on the bottom and hats on the top. This is a similar arrangement as a stock strut but coil overs use a smaller diameter spring and the strut body is usually threaded for height adjustment. The top of a strut can also vary by manufacturer with the uppermost shock stem being manufactured in different ways that require special hardware. Straddling the Street Glide with the lower shocks and the Harley-Davidson Reach seat. You can see the difference from the previous photo in how I sit more "into" the motorcycle and how my feet are complete flat on the ground. I also have more bend in my knee. The difference is significant for me.
I have an 07 Street glide with 1 inch lowering kit in front. I am 5 feet 6 inches and am interested in the shocks used on Genevieve's bike. How is the shock adjustment handled when riding 2-up versus solo rider?
I lowered my '07 BMW R 1200 RT with 1 inch shorter shocks sprung to my weight two years ago. My ride is more comfortable with the shocks built for me and I really like not having to think so much about where and how I stop now that I can comfortably get the balls of both feet down. The modification on my bike required shortening the center and side stands, and does not seem to have made a noticeable difference in handling.
I have a 2008 Harley-Davidson Street Glide that I would like to lower 1 inch and also get rid of the Harley air shocks. What progressive model of suspension would you recommend?
Kim, I've not ridden two-up on my Street Glide and have no plans to. I can tell you that with the additional weight of my 40-pound luggage on the back, the bike actually rides better, but if you add a whole person, it might bottom out since the shocks I have are the lowest the bike can go. I will ask David Zemla from Progressive to weigh in on this and post his response when I get it. Genevieve Schmitt
Properly set up shocks even lowered will greatly increase ride quality over stock units and the reduction in ride height will help keep your feet planted during those parking lot and gas station maneuvers that haunt many riders.

A coil spring is a mechanical device used to store and release energy and to absorb shock in the suspension system of an automobile. Made in the shape of a helix, a coil spring can be compressed and will then return to its natural resting length when unloaded. Coil springs have been used to suspend automobiles as early as 1906 and are found, in modern MacPherson strut assemblies on the majority of production cars. Vehicle sagging, uneven tire wear, excessive noise, bounce, or sway can all be symptoms of failing coil springs. When replacing coil springs it is highly recommended that the parts be replaced in pairs. It may also be the right time to replace related suspension parts such as shocks, struts and strut mounts.
