to offset the 230kg of the 22kWh lithium ion battery pack from which the i3 draws its power almost entirely.
To achieve high efficiency, the i3 uses BMW's LifeDrive architecture, which features a carbon passenger cell, keeping the vehicle weight down to a low 2,755 pounds. The 2+2 uses carriage doors to maximize access to the rear seats. Although the BMW i3 was originally designed as a pure EV, it will also be available with an optional range extender, the REx. The REx is a small engine that will primarily be used to charge the electric battery and extend the vehicle's range. The option is in response to findings from BMW's Mini E pilot program, which revealed that most
Recharging to 80 percent of battery capacity takes less than 4 hours using BMW's own home charging station, with a rating up to 7.4 kilowatts--higher than any other plug-in car except the Tesla Model S. BMW i3 cars will offer a Combined Charging System (CCS) quick-charging port as well, although today there are only a handful of public charging stations using that standard.

Under the hood of the i3 you ll find a small storage area (also called a frunk ) that houses the tire inflater and the 120V EVSE cable. The i3 s frunk is not watertight like you ll find in the Tesla Model S, so don t put your tax paperwork inside on your way to the IRS audit in the rain. Cargo capacity behind the rear seats comes in at 11.8 cubes, about the same as your average subcompact hatch. Getting the i3 sans range extender won t increase your cargo capacity as the area where the range extender fits remains off limits from your luggage.
Naturally, with the batteries centered below the car, the BMW i3 had solid handling. BMW s input on this part of the car is worth quoting: The new BMw i3 has a low centre of gravity which contributes to the driving dynamics of the vehicle. Aluminium chassis, electric motor, lithium-ion battery and Intelligent Energy Management are combined in the Drive module, embedded deep in the vehicle. Thanks to this original way of using the latest materials, the new BMw i3 is therefore not only extremely safe, but also agile and dynamic to drive.
The BMW i3 range extender version (REx) has the gasoline fuel door located at the right front side of the car.

In the few memorable days I drove the i3, I never used a single drop of petrol in the range extender.
I fell in love with this electric car from the BMW stable. I loved the design, the lightly coloured interior, the technology, the driving characteristics, the carbon fibre and plastic construction and the ability to run on renewable energy and not go near a petrol station too often.
Studies have been done as part of BMW’s Project i, involving more than 1,000 participants covering over some 12.5 million miles. BMW found that the average daily distance covered was around 30 miles meaning the range extender is deemed in some cases superfluous.
The 2015 BMW i3 is a clever design with suicide doors, that open like French doors on either side of the car.

Making our way into the i3 was smooth thanks to the suicide doors that eliminate the need for a B-pillar. Though the drawback to these fashionable doors is that if you are a kid sitting in the backseat, you're going to have to wait for daddy to come and open the door for you. There are no door handles for the rear doors, and you can't crawl into the backseats without having someone close the doors behind you either.
While the vegetable fiber yells "I am green!", its appearance and feel have brought mixed opinions in our office. Nonetheless, we all agreed on how the open-pores finish of the wood makes one feel refined while maintaining an air of youth at the same time. Brilliant. Speaking of the seats, the front ones are of particular interest here. They re truly comfortable while keeping a slim frame. We wish we d see these in many other mainstream BMW models. We could say the same about the floating nature of the two displays present on the dashboard. The 6.5-inch screen in front of the driver somehow reminds us of the infotainment screen on
, while the central 8.8-inch unit fits the car like a glove. While we re at it, we ll also mention the key fob. With its flatter aspect, this breaks away from the traditional BMW layout. We even like it more than a

The price starts around $43,000 for the Mega World version of the battery-only BMW i3. The REx range-extending engine adds almost $4,000 to the price, and it's easy to take a top-level BMW i3 past the $50,000 mark.

The i3 looks nothing like a standard Beemer. Ok, the car got the BMW grille and the propellor logo but there are few other resemblances. The car got a compact size but inside it feels MPV-ish. Elements that distinguish it from the masses are the huge wheels, the taller window for backseat passengers, the suicide doors and the application of 3 different colours for the exterior (for our car it was grey, black and blue).
Alternatively, customers can lease the i3 for 36 months by paying a one-off
. We were not big fans of where the on/off button is located, on the back side of the steering wheel, but assume i3 buyers will get used to it. In our short time with the i3, we never did.
The 2014 BMW i3 has so much going for it, from its futuristic interior to its dynamic, daring exterior styling. Yeah, it may not be pretty, but it's sufficiently fun, funky, and experimental, and its ambience will never be confused with anything else's.
It's just a shame that it's wholly unsatisfying to drive, and its ride is the chief culprit. For more than city jaunts, it's also one of the more uncomfortable vehicles we've driven this year, and that further solidifies its place down a rung from the typically excellent products BMW builds. Perhaps it would have been best if BMW would have left its badge off the i3.
The carbon fiber passenger cell means that there are no B-pillars, enabling the use of rear-hinged rear coach doors that make access to the rear seats easier (something that would be particularly useful if you are strapping in a child). On the downside, you can't get out without the front door being opened as the handle is positioned on the front of the door.
