The X5 xDrive35d's 3.0-liter turbodiesel inline-6 engine is one of the better diesels we've ever used, putting out gobs of torque and returning an average of 28-mpg over our time with it.
That stuff is all good, but let’s move onto the great stuff starting with BMW’s infamous 3.0 litre turbocharged inline six which produced 300 horsepower and 300 pound foot torque, not to mention one of the most intoxicating exhaust notes around. There are only four buttons, controlling various sport modes: you can individually adjust steering feel, suspension firmness, engine response, transmission aggressiveness, and possibly your parole officer's toaster oven. You can set steering feel to sport-plus, engine response to efficient, and the seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox to boot you in the kidneys. You can steer in comfort and ride like hell, at the same time, if that's your thing. And with the traction control button, that's five buttons to cycle through for Time Attack, track-day, give-the-neighborhood-kid-the-ride-of-his-life mode.

Keep in mind that this new six-pot not only makes the new M4 faster than the old M3, but it also weighs around 170 pounds less. BMW went to extreme lengths to make the M4 as light as possible - carbon fibre and aluminum is the new bread and butter. The new engine also weighs nearly the same as the 435i's straight-six, and that had one less turbo. The exclusion of a naturally aspirated engine had upset many BMW die-hards, but rest assured. The M4 has a clever anti-lag system that maintains 120,000rpm in the turbos at all times, so you constantly have instant boost when you need it. Say goodbye to turbo-lag.
This biturbo creation doesn't come close to matching the feral blipping of the E92, but the auto-rev does make the ride buttery smooth. Neck whiplashes and head thrusts are absent when cruising through the six gears, delivering a driving experience that mimics that of an automatic, a praise I only previously had for the M235i. Sure you can have that dual-clutch automatic, it's faster and more economical too. On the other hand, the manual sheds 26 pounds of weight and is a no-cost option.

As far as we're aware, Alpina can take the credit for introducing steering-wheel-mounted shifters on a road car, having added the technology way back in 1993. Never content with the clutter caused by having large-enough shift paddles, Alpina uses slick little pushbuttons for swapping cogs in the eight-speed ZF. The hidden switchgear is on the backside of the steering wheel spokes, right for upshift and left for downshift, clean and simple. The custom steering wheel itself is a wonderful piece under all circumstances - steering action is calibrated to be easier than on the standard Bimmer 7 Series while in Comfort/Efficiency mode and heavier than on the series car when in Sport+ mode. We finally have the technical details about the next generation 2015 BMW M3 (F80) and M4 (F82).  Yes, the current M3 coupe changes its name to M4, while the M3 continues as sedan only.  Both will share the same straight six turbo-charged engine and two transmission choices.  The high revving and naturally aspirated V8 of the current generation has been replaced by a turbo straight six. (BMW has not specified the new engine s displacements in this press release, but another outlet says it s twin-turbo 3.0-liter).  BMW estimates that the motor is good for 430 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque.  Of course, weight savings was the main goal for the next generation of M cars, and BMW is happy to announce that the car lost upto 180 kg or 397 pounds.

The base turbocharged four-cylinder in the Q5 is nothing to shy away from. The front-drive, 220-horsepower, 2.0-liter turbo four gets pretty good mileage, at 20/28 mpg. It's a gutsy performer with 0-60 mph times of just over 7.0 seconds, a bit slower and coarser than the six, but considerably less expensive in some trims. A 240-hp turbocharged four in the 28i model feels even a bit stronger than the base engine in the Q5, and whether you go for that or the six-cylinder 35i you get a new eight-speed automatic; by the numbers, it eclipses the Q5's straight-line performance and are better or on par with its fuel economy.

Upgrades made by Alpina to the 6 Series means that the 2016 Alpina B6 xDrive Gran Coupe is a great performer especially as a grand tourer. Before it gained a power boost, we said in a 2015 First Test that the car accelerates well for its size and takes corners well for a car that’s not going to spend a lot of time lapping a race track. Additionally, the ride quality doesn’t get sacrificed in the name of handling because the B6’s suspension handles road imperfections relatively well and doesn’t get upset too easily. While the interior is well made, the changes that Alpina made to the 6 Series’ interior also comes with quirks such as the funky steering wheel buttons that replace the paddle shifters, and are out of reach when the driver’s hands are in the 10 and 2 positions.

Refinement at cruising speeds is only just above average, mind you - not because of the engine, which fades into a hush once you’re up to speed, but because of the amount of road roar generated by those jumbo alloys. There’s a bit of wind patter from around the side mirrors at speed, too, but the overall noise level never gets close to being annoying on a long journey.
This is shown and worked out the engine can develop 608 horsepower with a torque of 800 Nm and will be available with some 500 r/min. I should say that this higher intensity compared to the previous year and to around 61 horsepower and 67 Nm of torque. Acceleration is therefore also stronger than its predecessor, it amounts to some 3.6 seconds to 100 km per hour. Speed that can develop the most amounts to 322 km per hour.

All about the Story is Fake (!) - Alpina never sells prototypes, Alpina does not produce multiple prototypes, no BMW-VIN will be put on the car after it left the factory, the VIN belongs to a car which was delivered to the US, not germany - The SA902A is an internal code from BMW for Cars that will be build by BMW and then get an Alpina-VIN etc. etc.
2016 BMW 7 Series gets 2.0 liter four-cylinder engine turbo in Turkey and China

This isn’t to say that the V8 in the Alpina feels bad at all. It feels quite powerful, and punchy like any V8 does. However when I hopped into the 760 after driving the Alpina, the difference in smoothness was noticeable. Vibrations are just one part of it, power delivery is another. Now obviously both of these cars were twin turbocharged, so they both had phenomenal low-end torque available. But where the V8 in the Alpina hits hard and fast, the V12 in the 760 delivers its power a little more gradually, with a substantial force that never seems to relent. The V8 feels like a sledgehammer, but the V12 feels like a Tsunami.
The real difference between these two cars is how their engines affect the driving experience. Many people might think its all about power and torque figures, but it’s more about how those things are delivered by the machine. A V12 is not needed to make 500, 600, 700 horsepower, especially now that everything is turbocharged. What a V12 does do, is smooth everything out substantially. This even goes as far as the tangible physics of the engine as it runs. A V12, by its very design of six cylinders on each bank, is naturally in perfect balance when the engine is spinning. This means that you don’t feel any vibrations coming through the chassis of the car as you drive along, everything feels more at peace. It is actually similar to how a rotary engine in a Mazda RX7 feels, except a V12 has loads more torque available when you put your foot down.
