With the two-door coupé M4 (F82) and the four-door limousine M3 (F80), BMW M GmbH – specialist in the development and production of high-performance BMW models – has released two red-hot irons into the streets which are giving all competitors a shiver. The source of power of their outstanding driving dynamics is the newly developed S55B30 serial six cylinder under the engine compartment of M4 and M3, which draws good 431 horse power and a maximum torque of 550 Newton meter from its three-liter cylinder capacity thanks to the forced respiration by two turbo-chargers.
In cooperation with the experts of Öhlins, Alpha N-Performance is at the moment also working on a high-end sports-chassis for M3 and M4, with which the growing power of the Bavarian bolide can also be perfectly translated into fast racing times.
Further power upgrades are underway: In short, performance upgrades of stages 2 and 3 containing amongst others, exhaust systems of the development partner “Lightweight” are offered by Alpha-N Performance.
You can draw your own conclusions on the tuner s work on the M4. In some way, it does lack the wow factor we normally attribute to tuning programs, but for what it was able to accomplish — developing a system for the M4 is no small feat — Alpha N Performance is on the right track toward building a tuning kit that we can all get behind. Besides, it s not totally fair to judge a tuner on a program that still has plenty of room to evolve in the future.
Moreover, Alpha-N attaches huge value to the protective functions of the EVOX chip-tuning box: On the one hand, all factory-fitted engine-protection functions remain intact. On the other hand, the EVOX box has a cold-start switch-off system for preserving the hardware in such a way that the box takes up its functions only after the engine attained an optimal operating temperature. Moreover, the box temporarily winds back the performance to standard level after 20 seconds under full load operation using a timer function. And don t worry about this kit doing serious damage to your precious M4, as Alpha-N has addressed this in two ways. First of all, the tuner installed a shut-off switch that keeps the car in its stock tune until the powerful six-pot reaches operating temperature. Secondly, the kit will only allow 20 seconds of full-throttle driving before disabling itself and reverting the M4 back to its stock level of tune. Sure, that could be slightly embarrassing in the middle of a race, but it s all about preventing that gem of an engine from self-destructing.
Hopefully, we see the final product, complete with the Stage 2 and 3 performance upgrades, sooner rather than later. We ve got high hopes on your kit, Alpha N Performance. Don t leave us hanging.
From a mechanical standpoint, the complete M4 GTS will feature the same water-injection system as the concept and first used by the M4 MotoGP Safety Car. The water-injection system utilises a 1.3 gallon water tank with water being injected directly into the plenums of the intake manifold. This results in lower compression temperatures and BMW claims that this results in extra horsepower and more torque.
The most significant point of difference between this M4 GTS and previously spied test mules are its wheels and the front splitter. The splitter featured looks identical to the carbon fibre one from the Concept M4 GTS and even includes the same orange accent. Meanwhile, the same set of orange and silver wheels of the concept car are present.
Beyond these elements, the M4 GTS prototype pictured features a large carbon fibre rear wing. Interestingly, it also features camouflage across the taillights suggesting that the advanced OLED lights of the concept will make their way onto the production car.
BMW M GmbH revealed that it will produce 700 special limited edition M4 GTS as its tribute to the BMW M3's 30 years in production, which started in 1986. Furthermore, with the production of the limited edition, the company also puts the spotlight on the M technology innovations, for powertrains, lightweight construction front and chassis, that are pioneered by BMW M engineers.
There’s a palpable sense of quality when you pop the door handle, see the frameless side glass drop by that precise couple of millimetres to clear the door seal, swing the door open and drop inside. Most of the cabin surfaces look and feel lustrous and options such as Nappa leather and carbon trim can make a BMW 4 Series look, feel (and actually be) very expensive.

. Thus, unlike normal BMWs where slipping into “Comfort” mode makes everything soft, the M4 never truly stays on a leash. You feel the car stepping on the road with plenty of confidence. For example, the electric power steering doesn t become light until you get to the parking stuff. Keep both hands on the wheel or go home. Then there's the double-clutch gearbox. You feel the transmission was built to perform blistering shifts, not to deliver ZF 8HP-like 100 percent smoothness in stop and go traffic.

When it comes to the M3 and M4, the car sounds just as good from the outside, while the speaker-generated noise inside the vehicle feels more organic - mind you, this is the amplified sound of the engine, not a recording. Having pleased my ears, I pulled over and started walking around the car, in order to serve my eyes this time. The same impression I had when seeing the M3/M4 on the Detroit floor where they debuted still stands. Both models have something that remind me of a well-executed running shoe. From the bespoke front and rear fascias to the way in which the fenders are pumped-up, the M3/M4 look like they re always training for a sprint race. Choosing between the two is nearly impossible. Yes, the coupe profile of the M4 should give it the visual edge, but the M3 has a very strong charm of its own. There s a guilty pleasure we take in seeing a sedan with such bold rear fenders.
For one thing, each and every body panel on the car is different, with the doors being the only unchanged bits. Inside, the difference to a standard 4 Series is smaller and yet there are enough M-specific elements to bring one into the right mood. The seats are perhaps the most striking elements. Their design once again reminds us of sporting gear. As for the illuminated emblems on the seat backs, we re not fans of the idea, but at least the lighting itself is discreet. In terms of comfort, we d give them a six and a half, in a world where the seats on the M6 get a nine. The M division's traditional red and yellow war paint for the speedometer and rev counter are obviously here - a nice touch you'll appreciate.
