New and Used Cars
BMW has issued a second recall for the BMW i8, citing a potential problem with the dynamic stability control (DSC) system. The campaign is limited …
To go along with the nonstandard powertrain, BMW offers the i8 in different "Worlds" instead of what would normally be referred to as trim levels. Basically design-and-options packages, the worlds act like curated paths for the buyer to follow. At the top, the Pure Impulse world includes all of the otherwise optional features, with a final MSRP just north of $150,000.
Woodcliff Lake, NJ – August 6, 2013… At a driving event at the BMW Group’s Miramas test track in France, the BMW i presented a prototype of its second production vehicle, the BMW i8. BMW i is synonymous with visionary mobility concepts and a new definition of premium quality that is strongly focused on sustainability. Following the world debut of the first production model, the BMW i3, the BMW Group’s next step will be to extend this revolutionary answer to the future challenges facing personal mobility to the sports car segment in the BMW i8. This plug-in hybrid model is the most progressive sports car of our time, extending the basic BMW i philosophy of sustainability to a new vehicle segment.
The BMW i8 fulfills the promise of The Ultimate Driving MachineTM in a revolutionary and mold-breaking form. This is reflected in a highly emotive design, dynamic sports car performance, and fuel efficiency and emissions figures worthy of a small car. Pairing an exceptionally lightweight, aerodynamically optimized body with cutting-edge BMW eDrive technology, a compact, turbocharged 1.5-liter BMW TwinPower Turbo gasoline engine and intelligent energy management, the BMW i8 marks the next stage in the evolution of the Efficient Dynamics strategy. Its revolutionary approach achieves an unprecedented balance between performance and fuel efficiency. Thanks to its carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) passenger cell, the BMW i8 sets new standards for a plug-in hybrid vehicle in terms of low weight. It can operate solely on electric power, which means no tailpipe emissions, and offers the dynamic performance of a sports car, with an expected 0 – 60 mph sprint time under 4.5 seconds.
The BMW i8 was designed from the outset as a plug-in hybrid sports car, with the emphasis on agile performance and outstanding efficiency. Its characteristic BMW i LifeDrive architecture provides the best possible basis for lightweight design. Its main components are the aluminum Drive module, which incorporates the internal combustion engine and electric motor, the battery, the power electronics and the chassis components, along with structural and crash functions, and the Life module, which essentially comprises the 2+2-seater CFRP passenger cell. This architecture also gives the BMW i8 a very low center of gravity and a near-perfect 50:50 axle load ratio, both of which increase its agility.
Updated 07/03/2014: BMW announced today packages and options for the i8 hybrid supercar. Among others cool updates, BMW will offer three different worlds for the i8: Giga World priced at $2,000, Pure Impulse World priced at $10,800 and Terra World priced at $3,000.
Updated 05/27/2014: BMW unveiled a new video in which it explains how it optimized dynamics and efficiency for the new i8. Check it out in the "Videos" tab.
Updated 9/1/2015: Our man Jonathan Lopez took some pics at Monterey Car Week. Enjoy!
, Styling is very true to the concept, 4.4 seconds to 100 km/h, Super-low center of gravity allows for stellar handling,
The BMW i8 is the most significant and forward thinking car on the road today. This is BMW's vision of the future, and, for once, the future is no longer doom and gloom. The future is a positive, thrilling place. A place that we want to be. Don't be scared, gearheads, we're going to be ok.
BMW has equipped the i8 with just a six speed automatic. In a world of eight and nine speed transmissions, I found myself consistently trying to force the car to shift to a gear above sixth. Guess that's what I've been trained to do.
But that's ok. The i8 is an ambassador of a friendly and exciting future. I love every little detail, especially the swooping gap between the trunk and fender at the rear. Sure, it's polarizing, but what other car has that? And to raise awareness of the i brand, I think BMW has had a huge success.
Unlike the i3, the i8 feels distinctly like a car inside. There is no goofy gearshift, no recycled felt, and no reclaimed wood trim inside. Instead, you get your standard BMW gearshift, thin but cozy bucket seats, rear seats that make the Porsche 911 look roomy and family car-ish, and a straight forward driving position.
But it looks crazier than any of those cars and it costs one tenth as much. ONE TENTH. BMW has cracked the code, because the i8 isn't just the deal of the century, it's a beacon of positivity as to what the future can hold for car fans. If you hate the i8, then you need to get a pill to fix your cynicism, because this car flat out rocks.
Mass producing lightweight carbon fiber for a road car is a huge deal. For decades, carbon fiber was supposed to be for people with millions of dollars who could afford the superest of supercars. But BMW is the first to bring carbon fiber to the people with the i3 and the i8. Yes, the i8's range is just 20 miles on electric, which isn't even close to the Volt, but the construction of the i8 is the next generation while the Volt feels old in comparison.
( Full Disclosure: BMW loaned us the i8 for five days. Five days where we couldn't go anywhere without having someone's jaw drop with a look like the future just drove by them. And that's because it did.)
The BMW i3 and i8 both make make extensive use of the material in their construction, and in doing so become the most affordable cars made of CF and the first mass produced models to use it as the main component in its construction.
The i3 and i8 are meant to represent the future of motoring as BMW sees it. And thankfully that doesn't mean soul sucking boredom. In the case of the i8, we have the 1.5 liter three cylinder from the Mini — which has been turboed to hell to make 228 horsepower and 236 pound feet of torque — sitting behind the driver. That charges the battery but also powers the rear wheels. Up front there is an electric motor producing 129 horsepower and 184 pound feet of torque.
The one place where I found a cornering peculiarity was during power down mid corner or at corner exit of a tight turn (this is very specific). Here's the scenario: You enter slow and wide, bring the nose to the apex, and that's where you slam the throttle because the corner opens up on exit. The i8 engages the front electric motor on power down to help boost you out of the corner.
It's also surprisingly fun, which I do attribute to the narrow, relatively hard tires that are on board. That brings the limits within reach at speeds that won't kill you. Under constant throttle, the i8 remains neutral and a lift doesn't really induce oversteer. For a fact, the i8 cannot drift, no matter how badly we wish it could.
It's about driving to what best suits the car, and the i8 needs a different approach sometimes.
I don't know what to say here. Even driving the i8 is like playing with a toy. Just a toy for adults.
That's a gigantic delta, and one that makes the i8 the deal of the century as far as I'm concerned.
On performance and price, the i8 technically competes with cars like the Audi R8, Porsche 911, Mercedes-AMG GT, Corvette, and others of that ilk. But in the real world, this is like flying an F22 Raptor in 1945. Compared to everything else in its class, the i8 feels like the first generation of something new and exciting. The other cars feel like the last generation of something that has been around forever.
The best part is that the i8 is just a damn good car, a sign that we don't have to worry about robots taking over for us anytime soon.

Click past the jump to read more about the BMW i8 "iTRON" By German Special Customs.
The German Special Customs-tuned BMW i8 looks every bit the part of an all-conquering hybrid sports car. The front section has been dramatically upgraded with a distinct front spoiler-bumper with its own large cooling air inlets. New integrated LED Daytime headlights and a "spoiler sword" with winglets provides a far more aggressive appearance that belies the importance of the i8 s impressive hybrid capabilities.
Nearly in time for the market introduction of the BMW i8 serial model just a few months ago, the styling specialists from German Special Customs, Chemnitz, now present the first design drafts that offer an outlook on the in-house i8 interpretation with the project name "iTRON".
Don’t get me wrong. I love the design of the BMW i8, but if German Special Customs can make it look like this, there’s no way I’m going back to its normal design.
As compared to the downright delicate serial version, the i8 is modified by German Special Customs – in short: GSC €– is much more aggressive and powerful. A distinctively shaped front spoiler bumper, with large cooling air inlets, integrated LED daylight headlights and a spoiler sword characterised by its winglets, gives the "iTRON" an extra portion of overtaking prestige, as also supported by the air outlets integrated into the new motor cowl. The winglets of the front spoiler sword with their raised sides reflect the side sills again so that the Bavarian now looks much more solid. At the rear, German Special Customs give the i8 what it is missing entirely in the serial condition: exhaust end tubes! End-tube blinds aligned with the shapes of the i8 are integrated in the GSC design s new rear apron, which also once again repeats the winglets of the side sills and visually leads on until behind the rear wheels.
BMW understandably took its time developing the production i8 but in the end, the time spent on testing and developing the car was worth the wait. Its futuristic design and unrivaled technology are two big reasons why the i8 has become a popular model.
With the plug-in-hybrid racer i8, BMW has doubtlessly revolutionised the classic sports car. 1.5 litres of displacement spread across three cylinders and 231 PS / 320 Nm, in combination with a 131 PS / 250 Nm electric motor are enough for this very dynamic all-wheel drive car to offer a driving output worthy of a "real" sports car. The electric racer sprints from zero to 100 km/h in only 4.4 seconds and reaches a maximum speed of 250 km/h. The sensation is that in spite of this power, the BMW can offer a combined consumption of only 2.1 litres of gasoline per 100 kilometres for the i8! Powered purely electrically, the plug-in hybrid, fuelling up mostly from the socket, can drive up to 37 kilometres and reach speeds of up to 65 km/h.
It also has a revolutionary engine setup that features a 1.5-liter, turbocharged, three-cylinder engine and an electric motor that together produce 362 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque that gets mated to a six-speed auto transmission with the electric motors hooked up to a two-stage transmission.
