As for BMW s middleweight tourer, the 2014 R1200RT is priced at $17,650, a $300 increase over the 2013 model. For 2014, the RT received the new liquid-cooled boxer engine, new frame, two ride modes and a fairing design inspired by the K1600 models.
says the exhaust seen on the spied machines is different from the one on the new R1200GS, but there is still plenty of time for changes. The plastic bodywork has also received some changes, and it looks like the 2014 R1200RT will sport the adaptative headlights of its bigger K1600GT sibling. We re looking forward to see the new boxer tourer and we re ever so glad to see BMW extending the use of their new 1170cc, 125 hp power unit to other models. Check out the
BMW prepares a neg generation of their R1200RT touring bike, and some guys were on the watch: hence here are the first spy photos of the 2014 bikes, seen on oprn road testing in southern France. For now, it looks like the 2013 R1200RT will be powered with the engine present in the new R1200GS, BMW s new liquid-cooled unit. We might also expect that the next generation of R1200RT bikes uses the same single-sided swingarm and maybe the exhaust system, too.

We returned to the lavish resort, safe and sound (minus one crippled RT), and despite the wintry weather, no one was complaining about being cold. I was still amazed that I’d completed the ride with summer gloves on and shiver free, a true testament to how much effort BMW put into keeping the RT rider cosy over long distances in inclement weather.
The new chassis is particularly rigid and provides assured rider feedback. The only thing lacking on the RT, or any telelever-equipped BMW, is the ability to tighten up a turning line while trail braking. It doesn’t take long to adapt to the lack of brake dive though, and you quickly learn to do all of your braking, which can be quite hard on this bike, in a straight line.
There’s simply no other bike on the market that combines luxury-touring bike comfort with sport bike handling the way the R1200RT does. But what really sets this bike apart from others it its exceptional weather protection, and the way this riding season seems to be kicking off (read cold and wet), it should be a popular choice.

Aside from the styling changes, the 2014 R1200RT receives a new one-piece tubular steel frame and the 125-hp, liquid-cooled boxer twin. It’s the same engine used in the R1200 GS Adventure, the one with a heavier flywheel (.9 kg heavier), which boosts low-end torque, and the more powerful (and heavier by.6 kg), 540-watt alternator.
One feature BMW has included as standard equipment, but that’s not really necessary, is an electric quick shifter. More commonly used on sport bikes, it’s meant to be used at high speeds with the throttle open, to reduce shift times and to drop lap times. It’s uniquely designed to work when upshifting and downshifting on the RT, but its operation was clunky at lower speeds, and it raised the effort at the shift lever. I used it a few times and resorted to old school, clutch assisted shifting. It did work exceptionally well at high speeds, though.
Wait, did I confuse you? Why am I discussing BMW’s adventure tourer when I should be all over the new RT? Because, once stripped of their bodywork (which is all-new on the RT), it would be difficult to distinguish the latest generation RT from the latest GS.
BMW’s R1200GS got a complete overhaul last year, receiving an all-new frame, and it was the first bike to use the firm’s latest liquid-cooled boxer engine.

Because it is more compact, this new boxer allowed engineers to make the bike narrower between the legs, as well as making the seat 30 mm longer overall while dropping seat height by 20 mm.
The upright riding position is very relaxed, though it feels like you’re sitting high atop the RT rather than in it. With the standard seat set to the higher position (there’s also a 25 mm higher or 25 mm lower seat available as a no-cost option), legroom was just adequate for me, enough that I wouldn’t sacrifice reach to the ground by opting for the taller seat. If you’re of Editor ’Arris’ proportions, you should opt for the taller seat.
Opting for the $1,530 Touring package adds cruise control, seat heating, Dynamic ESA and an in-dash GPS. The GPS is integrated well into the bike’s computer, and any warnings or error messages that might pop up are displayed in the GPS screen (a small warning triangle light grabs your attention), allowing you to read a description of the problem on the GPS screen. If you choose the RT without the GPS, there’s a different visor on the dash, so you’re not left with a gaping hole or a tacky cover to conceal it.

Thank you for the information on costing out the BMW R1200RT. With your information and that of BMW Motorrad USA I was able to estimate what a new 2015 would run me prior to heading to the dealer.

BMW USA Announces Compensations for Customers Affected by the 2014 R1200RT Recall
The new liquid-cooled boxer engine on the BMW motorcycles has brought numerous interest amongst bike lovers, some looking forward to it and some still thinking that BMW would be making a big mistake! Unfortunately, certain changes do bring with them some problems too! Apart from the oil leak that this new liquid-cooled engine brought with it, other problems arose too.. and this cause with this new engine change BMW decide to freshen up a bit the whole model! One of the bikes which seems to have been been badly effected was the new BMW R1200RT, where in June BMW issued a Stop-Ride order for all the RT owners!!
Surely, BMW has been financially effected! As pointed out, in just few months, they had already sold 8000 units around the globe and wanted to make sure the owners are kept happy! In the US, BMW was giving its clients to option to choose between a $2500 cash payment for all those who were willing to wait until this new fix was in hand and installed or make use of a replacement bike plus $1,000 in credit towards BMW gear or accessories, until again the fix was ready! For those who, cause of this problem, they were feeling insecure to get back on their RT, one could opt to either choose another BMW together with a $1000 credit or even have their bike bought back!!
Dynamic front headlight assembly comprising a main low-beam headlight and two high- beam headlights as standard, plus LED Corona Rings as an option.
The BMW Motorrad Pro onboard computer included as standard ups the ante for comfort and convenience in the touring segment with a number of functions that cannot be found on any of its competitors. It puts a wealth of useful information at the rider’s fingertips, ranging from the oil level to the voltage of the onboard electrical system to a gear shift indicator.
The new flat twin boxer engine is basically the same as the DOHC power unit on the BMW R 1200 GS. Prior to being installed in the R 1200 RT, however, it was first carefully tailored to the specific requirements of a touring bike. It produces an output of 92 kW (125 hp) at 7,750 rpm and musters its peak torque of 125 Nm (92 lb-ft) at 6,500 rpm.
The menu structure has been designed for the specific demands of motorcycling, just as it was on the BMW K 1600 GT and GTL. It has a flat hierarchical structure and can be safely operated by riders using the multi-controller without having to take their eyes off the road. The same is true when it comes to controlling the navigation system that is available as an accessory – dispensing with the need to operate it via the touchscreen while on the move. Riders are also able to simply program the “favorite” button with a function of their choice for direct access.
It was more than 35 years ago when one of the most powerful sets of BMW Motorrad initials first appeared – RT, a touring bike unprecedented in form, offering supreme comfort out on the road. Ever since, the BMW RT has reigned as the quintessential choice for highly comfortable and dynamic touring on two wheels. The latest incarnation of this innovatively appointed, high-performance tourer – the R 1200 RT – has been thoroughly optimized all round and equipped with a new engine to make it even more adept at long-distance travelling combined with excellent riding dynamics.
The following data can be called up via the BMW Motorrad Pro onboard computer: Total mileage, distance covered, trip meter 1+2, automatic trip meter (reset after a break of 6h), ambient temperature including ice warning at temperatures below 3 °C (37 degrees F), average fuel consumption 1 + 2, average fuel consumption since reset, current fuel consumption, average fuel consumption for range calculation, range, current speed, average speed, oil level, Tire Pressure Monitor with optional TPM, onboard electrical system voltage, date, break time, riding time, service date, distance to service.

2014 BMW R1200RT More Aggressive And Sporty- for the boyfriend and without the saddle bags! More
BMW used the EICMA motorcycle show as a platform to showcase the 2014 version of its R1200RT tourer.
As far as design is concerned, the 2014 BMW R1200RT comes with a new body work that was carefully designed to slide easier through the air, a smart dash with a color 5.7” TFT display and a sporty windshield.
Seating comfort and ergonomics have likewise been further improved for rider and passenger alike. The ergonomic triangle formed by the handlebars, seat and footrests has been lowered by 20 millimetres to make it even easier to reach the floor, something which shorter riders and passengers especially will appreciate when manoeuvring or getting on and off the bike. Thanks to their outstanding comfort and effective wind and weather protection, BMW RT models have always been renowned for their excellent long-distance capabilities, now further improved by the addition of an optimised windshield. The front headlight assembly is based on the headlight design featured on the BMW Motorrad K 1600 models and lends the new R 1200 RT a highly dynamic appearance. A safety-enhancing daytime running light can be fitted as an ex-works option.
The instrument cluster has undergone a complete makeover, with the new R 1200 RT now featuring a large 5.7-inch TFT colour display to provide the rider with an even greater wealth of data. This is where the extensive information from the standard-fit BMW Motorrad Pro onboard computer can also be called up, for instance. The display is supplemented by the analogue speedometer and rev counter dials. And for the ultimate in touring comfort, the list of available factory-fitted options includes an audio system with innovative operation via the multi-controller.
Dynamic ESA for optimum riding dynamics in any situation as an ex-works option. The new R 1200 RT features a new, continuous main frame to give it even greater directional stability. And when fitted with the optionally available semi-active suspension BMW Motorrad Dynamic ESA (Electronic Suspension Adjustment), the new R 1200 RT attains unprecedented levels of riding safety, performance and comfort, with the damping being automatically adapted to the prevailing conditions to suit the riding situation and the manoeuvres being carried out.
Multifunctional instrument cluster with TFT colour display, BMW Motorrad Pro onboard computer and innovative audio controls.
Derived from the boxer unit on the BMW R 1200 GS, the new engine produces a peak output of 92 kW (125 hp) at 7,750 rpm and its maximum torque of 125 Nm (92 lb-ft) at 6,500 rpm. To ready them for use on the new R 1200 RT, the centrifugal masses of both the crankshaft and the alternator were increased, resulting in even smoother engine running. Comfort has been given an additional boost by using a longer secondary transmission ratio to keep the revs lower.
The bike is built around the new liquid-cooled, twin-cylinder boxer, 1.170 cc engine which rewards you with a maximum output of 92 kW (125 hp) at 7,750 rpm and 125 Nm (92 lb‑ft) of torque at 6,500 rpm. The engine is combined with a new chassis that comes with a continuous frame which helps you get first class performances in terms o ride and handling.
