The all-wheel-drive system, combined with the traction-control system, allowed just enough tire spin to keep the BMW steering and rotating in mud, while also keeping torque going to wheels that had enough grip for forward motion. The ground clearance is surprisingly good. I thought I was going to leave the front bumper in several locations where, it turned out, it didn’t make the slightest contact. Most important, in a gravel lot, I found out that the front/rear power split and torque-vectoring rear differential allows for big, graceful donuts with judicious use of the throttle.

Pricing on the X5 xDrive40e is not available yet, but it will hit European dealers in the fall of 2015. There is no mention of its U.S. release, but I fully expect it to hit U.S. dealers at the same time, given BMW will build it in the Spartanburg, SC plant. I expect pricing to fall somewhere between the $56,200 xDrive35i and the $70,100 xDrive50i, so look for it to land around $63,000.

With fuel getting increasingly expensive and SUVs continuing to sell well, manufacturers needed to adjust in order to keep fuel economy high. This new influx of plug-in hybrid SUVs from BMW, Porsche and soon Audi are just one way to deliver high fuel economy while maintaining good performance. Personally, I would prefer to see more performance-oriented diesel engines, but I also understand that diesel engines tend to be significantly more expensive and they are still not very popular here in the U.S. The 2016 BMW X5 xDrive40e is a nice alternative though.

The X5's hydraulic steering is heavy, but in a good way that gives the driver a crystal clear understanding of what's happening at the road surface. Plus, the X5's steering is exceptionally precise and responsive. These are worthy trade-offs for needing to muscle the wheel from time to time.

The V-8, with its turbochargers tucked in the vee between the banks of the V-8, doesn’t change, but it gains BMW’s Valvetronic variable valve timing and now booms out a maximum 445 horsepower between 5,500 and 6,000 rpm (up by 45 horses). Torque plateaus at 480 lb-ft between 2,000 and 4,500 rpm (an increase of 30 lb-ft over its predecessor).

Something that I didn't like much was the active steering system, which is a $1,550 option. In normal mode it's very lightly weighted, but has a very odd feel to it … it's off center and there's a lot of slop and response is slow, but then the system seems to catch up once more angle is dialed in and then abruptly turns. It almost felt like an early arcade racing game where the steering wheel effort doesn't exactly seem to correlate with what your car on screen was doing. It's just a disconnected feeling here in the X5, which isn't exactly comforting. Because of that, I spent my night with the car set in either sport or sport-plus modes -- more like what I'm used to in BMW vehicles.

DIGITAL EDITOR ANDREW STOY: I've made no secret of my affection for diesel powertrains, and the BMW straight-six does nothing to dampen my enthusiasm. It's extraordinarily smooth and quiet, with only its lower-pitched mechanical sounds to give it away as anything unusual. Even my one, incredibly minor complaint about modern diesels -- glow plug wait in extreme cold -- appears to have been engineered out. I pressed the X5's start button on a 4-degree morning and it took less than one second to begin cranking. As we learned with our long-term Mercedes-Benz GL350 Bluetec, a diesel engine is the perfect powertrain for a large utility, and the X5's is superb.

Even though its starting price is considerably less than that of the X5, a loaded Summit model with all-wheel drive and a V-6 comes within a couple grand of the X5's starting price and features a competitive luxurious interior, an easier-to-use multimedia system, more cargo space and genuine all-road capability. Nothing in the category, though, can touch the Land Rover LR4 for off-road prowess, and it also features a more powerful V-6 engine than the X5 and much more interior space (thanks to its boxier styling) for less money. The Cayenne’s 3.0 liter turbodiesel V6 motor remains unchanged for 2015 and is mated with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Stuttgart’s diesel produces 240 hp and twists out a stump pulling 406 lb-ft of torque from 1750 to 2500 rpm. VW’s ownership of Porsche is evident as this 3.0 liter diesel motor is found in its corporate cousins, the Audi Q7 and the VW Touareg.

The Porsche Cayenne Diesel accelerates 0-60 miles per hour in 7.2 seconds which drops to 7.1 seconds with the optional Sport Chrono package. The Cayenne Diesel’s top speed is 135 miles per hour and is able to tow a stout 7,716 lbs. Unbelievably a VW Touareg Diesel with the same motor manages a 0-60 time in 6.9. I am not sure how marketing allowed that to happen. Multiply the Cayenne Diesel’s fuel capacity of 26.4 gallons by its highway mileage of 29 MPG and you get a bladder busting 765 miles. Base MSRP is $62,300 but Porsche options can rapidly escalate its sticker.

Once inside, the interior of the X5 feels more open, airy and wide. Seating is very upright and gives a commanding view and the BMW X5 has a rather wide center console while the highlight tech center piece is the 10.2” ultra-wide screen. The iDrive has the larger dial which was finger writing input ability and the screen is so wide it can easily display NAV plus one other configurable choice. There is even a cool graphical display of power/torque as well as the front/back split of power going to the wheels.

The X5 has a host of driver assist tech options including an awesome Head-Up Display that can show speed, directions and even current speed limits. Part of the driver assist packages are lane departure warning, blind spot detection, and active cruise control. BMW even offers Night Vision with Pedestrian detection, but it’s a steep $2,300.

Stylistically, the X5 has upright BMW twin kidney grilles with headlight assemblies that flow all the way into the side fender. The X5’s hood is all one piece with no annoying cheap bean counter split across the front nose of the hood as is present on the 2, 3, 4 and 5 series. When viewed from the side, the X5’s rear doors look overly long but do open up to a very roomy back seats. Though there is an optional third row, it’s rather small and in my opinion, intended for small children.

The BMW is noticeably quicker than the Porsche and reflected in their 0-60 times. I did find some understeer on the X5 but required quite a bit of speed into a tight left hander to find. I found the X5’s suspension teutonic firm, but not at all harsh. On the highway, I was surprised how helpful the blind spot detection is in rush hour traffic and the surround/top view was especially nice when I went to park it in my garage and helped make sure I didn t ding the door on our 9,000 lbs two-post lift.

This time the Porsche has added quite a bit of tech to narrow the gap and the BMW has lost some of its driving dynamics to luxury and size. If one had to tow 7,500 lbs, you’d have to go with the Porsche because of its higher tow rating over the BMW’s lesser 6,000 lbs rating.

Where the Cayenne seemed less at home was with any kind of hard cornering since the rather tall 255/55 18’s just tend to roll over on the sidewalls. However that kind of driving isn t what the Cayenne diesel is intended for; it’s more of a long haul cruiser type.

Firing up the Cayenne diesel, one barely notices the diesel clatter. It’s really not much more than modern DFI engine’s idle. At throttle tip in, you feel the typical diesel tremendous torque. Once underway and up to highway speeds, the Cayenne settles in and just wants to cruise, and with the combination of 8 speed automatic and a large amount of torque, the engine never really seems to have to labor.

The Cayenne’s cockpit wraps around the driver with a sloping console. Porsche’s one-button one-function ethos leads to a plethora of buttons. The overall implementation though is excellent and the Porsche has a very expensive feeling cabin.

Introduced in 2011, the second generation Porsche Cayenne has been updated with a host of subtle changes that takes a trained eye to spot. The 2015 models have new intakes on the front clip, as well as new LED lights and a slightly updated interior. The biggest change in the interior is the 918-inspired steering wheel that adds paddle shifting plus steering wheel mounted controls. Previously if you wanted steering wheel mounted controls, you needed their clumsy thumb shifter steering wheel.

The X5's supportive standard front seats will displease no one. As usual, though, we're strong advocates of the available multicontour seats. Blessed with seemingly infinite adjustments and an uncanny combination of firmness and compliance, the 20-way multis are among the best seats in any vehicle. We also like the optional adjustable second-row seats, though sadly, they can't be combined with the third-row seat. As for that third row, it's nice that BMW continues to offer it, but most adults will likely find it cramped and uncomfortable. The X5 is more of a 5+2, if you will, than an honest 7-passenger crossover.

On the road, the X5 strikes a sublime balance between comfort and control. The ride is firm, in typical Germanic fashion, but the sophisticated dampers expertly absorb sharp impacts. In corners, the X5's sedan-derived underpinnings deliver excellent handling precision, particularly if the optional active roll-stabilization system is specified. High-speed stability is exemplary, of course, with little road or wind noise to speak of. From the driver's standpoint, crossovers don't get much better than this.

Under the hood, the 35i models' familiar 3.0-liter turbo inline-6 serves up smooth, strong acceleration, while the 8-speed automatic rips off rapid yet seamless shifts. Truth be told, this powertrain is all most folks will ever need. Our favorite, though, is the slightly pricier xDrive35d's turbodiesel engine, which effortlessly launches the 2.5-ton X5 with its 413 lb-ft of torque, and returns a mind-boggling 31 mpg hwy. The xDrive50i's twin-turbo V8 is a real hoot with its 445 eager horses, but if you're put off by this model's price and/or fuel economy, the other two engines are worthy substitutes.

BMW rolled out the third-generation X5 (F15) as a 2014 model. Available in sDrive35i, xDrive35i, xDrive35d and xDrive50i trims, the current X5 is available with three engine choices. The base sDrive35i is a rear-wheel drive model that features a turbocharged six-cylinder engine that produces 300 horsepower. In many ways there was not an SUV on the market quite like the BMW X5 upon its introduction, and the German manufacturer has continued to improve the vehicle, both in terms of its performance and features. The first-generation BMW X5 (E53) was offered from 2000 to 2006. It was initially offered with a 4.4-liter V8 engine, a five-speed automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive. A 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine became standard starting with the 2001 model year, with the V8 available as an option. Starting in 2002 a 4.6-liter V8 became available, and a revamped 4.4-liter V8 and a six-speed automatic transmission rolled out for the 2004 model year.

The availability of a third-row seat also means that the second-generation X5 can seat up to seven, and cargo space also improved with the 2007 redesign.

The BMW X5 35d was the sports car of the group, not only accelerating quickly but handling well enough to make me look forward to driving on twisting back roads. If you are considering buying a sporty luxury station wagon, the X5, which costs $51,200, would be a fitting choice.
The Audi Q7
In contrast, the Audi Q7 3.0 TDI logged an impressive 29 mpg on one 70-mile trip, mostly on the highway. It is the heaviest of the group, at 5,512 pounds, but still feels somewhat car-like compared with other SUVs -- though not as nimble as the BMW X5. Inside, the Audi has a bigger third row where adults can be comfortable on long trips. The BMW's optional third row is practical for small children only.
The Mercedes-Benz GL320
If you want a full-size pickup truck but need something more practical and perhaps more highbrow, the $59,950 Mercedes GL320 BlueTEC is for you. (Mercedes just began rolling out a slightly revised GL350 version for $59,950). I found the Mercedes to be the most useful vehicle of the group, and the most practical. Its high, boxy shape, while not as sleek as the others, makes more room for passengers and cargo. What the interior lacks in high-fashion detail, it makes up largely in its no-nonsense minimalism.

On the sport side, the X5 xDrive35i makes for a lot of fun, but lacks the power for serious driving. Working the throttle down a twisty road, this X5 didn't push me back in the seat with its acceleration, merely doing an adequate job picking up speed on the turn exits. If you want to track an X5 or merely get a thrill from the acceleration, consider the 445 horsepower X5 xDrive50i. BMW built an X5 M for a few model years, but now you can only get the X6 M model, with 555 horsepower.

Of course, these days BMW models vary greatly depending on their included options. This X5 xDrive35i came with the M Sport and the Dynamic Handling packages, the latter which includes air suspension on the rear axle. Dynamic Handling helped make it as comfortable as a Mercedes-Benz ML-class on the freeway, but also let me push it hard through the turns. M Sport adds what BMW calls its Sport automatic transmission, which includes steering wheel-mounted paddles for manual gear selection.

Flashes from my time driving the 2014 BMW X5 xDrive35i: I'm cruising down the freeway wrapped in the comfortable, 20-way power adjustable leather seat while the suspension's adaptive dampers and air support scramble over bumps to keep the ride smooth. I can't really hear the engine as the revs are kept low by the eight-speed automatic transmission, making it easy to enjoy music played through the nine-speaker audio system.

In a Friday press announcement, German carmaker BMW noted a clarification to a report that appeared last week in a German magazine that claimed the BMW may have manipulated its diesel-powered X3 compact sport utility vehicle (SUV) in a manner similar to that used at VW. I bought my custom made X5 3.5d with an M package last year in April. The car happened to be parked outside in sub-zero temperature of -10F and windchill of -18F. The car was parked at a rooftop parking out in the open and in a corner. When I tried to start it after being parked for 2 days the engine won't start. It seemed like the diesel couldn't handle the cold weather. The ignition would work and crank the engine but the engine was not getting any fuel. It displayed a message "Please wait - Preheating" but it would then go away and still won't start. After a few attempts then the battery started running low. It showed me another error message that there is a Drivetrain malfunction and to drive slowly. Finally it displayed a message that the engine can be started in 10 minutes. After 10 minutes of waiting, it took a couple of tries to finally start it. The check engine light stayed on. Took the car in to the dealer and they kept it for a week and tried to replicate the issue but couldn't find anything and just reset the codes. Bottom line is that the diesel engine model might have issues in extreme cold weather - stick with the gasoline engine if you live in a place where the temp can drop to -10 or more.
