Unfortunately, the Mercedes-Benz GLA is simply too new to have earned a reliability score from automotive experts at J.D. Power. We're encouraged by the above-average score of its larger sibling, the GLK, though we caution against making any reliability predictions about the GLA until it's been out for at least a few more months. Since the X1 has been on sale since 2013, however, it's already earned a J.D. Power score: three circles out of five in the firm's Power Circle Ratings, indicating average reliability.
The introduction of the Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class highlighted the desire for more compact vehicles in the luxury segment. To further cater to those drivers, Mercedes-Benz has introduced the 2015 Mercedes-Benz GLA — a compact crossover that delivers the performance of Mercedes-Benz with the fuel-efficiency and family-friendly features of a small utility vehicle. But the GLA isn't alone in its conquest to capture the rapidly growing compact crossover segment.
After this, all eyes turned to what the folks from Mercedes-Benz would get to the table. Mind you, it had been silent for a long time but now we know why. The German car manufacturer finally showcased what it had in stored and they christened it the GLA. Now, we have driven the Audi Q3 and the BMW X1, but not the Merc GLA, so this comparison will be roughly based on the specifications of the cars.
Presented as a concept at the Paris Motorshow in October 2008, the BMW X1 joined series production an year later, at the BMW enterprise in Leipzig. At the time of its arrival, the X1 was considered to be the first premium compact SUV, although it did not feature the proportions of a compact SUV. Its 1.545 meter height was closer to that of an estate than that of an SUV, as for the design, it looked more like an elevated 3 Series Touring than like a genuine SUV. As a matter of fact, the resemblance to the 3 Series is not just at a stylistic level. The X1 uses the technical platform of the former 3 Series Touring (E91), as the all wheel drive system xDrive is built as based on the rear wheel drive.
Let's talk about compact luxury for a moment. Where once upon a time, every sahib worth his salt had to be hauled around in close to five metres of lavishly trimmed metal, these days, it's perfectly acceptable for him - or today's version of him, at least - to be at the wheel of a stylish compact luxury car. The flavour of the season is the compact sedan, what with the excellent Audi A3 launched in 2014, and the swoopy Mercedes-Benz CLA launching later this month, and the luxury hatchback invasion of 2013 before that. But let's not forget what first introduced India to the idea that a relatively small car could still be a thing of opulence, command a price higher than Rs 20 lakh, and wear a fancy badge on its nose. It was, of course, the compact luxury SUV.
Cost There are a lot of factors to consider when calculating the overall cost of a vehicle. The main consideration is Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP). Whether you pick the BMW X1 or the Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class, it's going to cost you about the same. Another consideration is the Destination Charge, which is a standard charge for transporting the vehicle to the dealer from where it's built. The BMW X1 will cost more in terms of transportation costs than the Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class.

Though the basic body structure of the vehicle remains the same, it now comes with certain exterior and interior modifications along with some additional equipment. With this upgrade, Audi aims at offering a tough competition to its arch German rivals, BMW and Mercedes who have their own entry level SUVs in the market. Though, Audi was the first to explore this segment in India with the Q3, it was soon followed by BMW with their X1 and recently Mercedes decided to join in as well with the GLA class. We take a look at what these compact premium SUV's have to offer in term of style, equipment and performance.
It's a German showdown to conquer the top spot in the entry-level luxury SUV space as Mercedes, BMW and Audi battle it out. The BMW X1 and Audi Q3 have been in the market for quite some time. But Mercedes will soon introduce its product, the GLA, to challenge the two and to capture a share of the entry-level luxury SUV segment. So we decided to compare the diesel variants of these three SUVs to find out which product outdoes the others.

From there the GLA250 exclusively adds 19-inch alloy wheels (17s on Q3), panoramic sunroof, electrically adjustable front seats with heating, bi-xenon headlights with auto high-beam, satellite navigation, front parking sensors with semi-automatic parking function, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitor and nine airbags – adding rear side airbags and a driver’s knee airbag to the Audi’s six in total, including dual front, front-side and full-length curtain protection.

There are three engines to choose from in the standard model: two diesels and one petrol (there's also a madcap high-performance AMG GLA 45 that we’ve reviewed separately). The two diesels both displace 2.1 litres and produce 134 and 174bhp respectively, while the GLA 250 petrol is a 2.0-litre turbo producing 208bhp. Both the more powerful diesel and the petrol are only available with Mercedes’ 4MATIC four-wheel-drive system, as well as the seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. The less powerful entry-level diesel, however, is only available with front-wheel drive, but it does retain the choice between dual-clutch or manual transmission.
I haven't driven the Mercedes, but I currently drive the X1 and it is a very nice car. Same with the Q3, taken it for a spin and loved it. X1 is great on gas too, and gives you decent performance considering how very little it uses in terms of gas. Would you be getting the diesel model? In all honesty, the Mercedes is the ugliest out of the lot, and in terms of these lines of cars, Mercedes "cheaper" models are something I've never found to be of their top quality. Seems like they skimp out on a lot on their more affordable models. Just my opinion. What are the prices like in the US for these? These are all essentially $60,000 cars over here in Australia.

It’s become something of a motoring writers’ clich that Audi interiors are the best in the business… but they really are. The Q3’s cabin is meticulously constructed from sturdy, yet soft-touch materials. The layout is hard to fault too. Easier to fault is interior space – rear seat passengers find themselves a little bunched together. On the plus side, boot space is plentiful at 460 litres.

The GLA's exterior design appears to be two-parts A-class hatchback mixed with one-part M-class off-roader. Essentially, there are two trim levels: SE and AMG Line. Each one gives the GLA a different look and style for the exterior. In its base form your money gets you a six-speaker stereo with USB and Bluetooth, cruise control, dual-zone climate control, alarm with tow away and motion sensor, man-made 'leather' trim, rear-vision camera, front and rear proximity sensors, electric front seats with memory and heating, auto headlights and wipers, active bi-xenon headlights, keyless entry, gigantic panoramic sunroof and power mirrors and windows.
Pod względem osiągów Mercedes ustępuje obu konkurentom. Przy czym nie jest to wcale wina słabszego napędu, lecz zastosowanej dwusprzęgłowej skrzyni biegów. Przełożenia zmienia niezbyt szybko, a do tego potrafi to robić w niezdecydowany sposób. U konkurentów mechanizmy działają znacznie sprawniej – w Audi dwusprzęgłowe, 7-biegowe DSG, a w BMW jest automat, który ma 8 przełożeń.
Audi Q3 is the best looking as compared to its peers. From outside, Audi Q3 is the only one which has been given the most number of changes while the other vehicles are given tweaks here and there. It is the car which gets an overall different looks with latest changes in the form of new chrome grille on the front façade with satin finishing, renovated headlamps and daytime running headlights. The side profile of the car gets updates as well incorporating new set of alloy wheels. Where BMW X1 has also got the aesthetic values but Q3 is on the edge here. Volvo V40 and Mercedes Benz are also beautifully shaped but they do not match to the class of Audi Q3. Dimensionally speaking, BMW X1 is the longest car with the length of 4454mm and have the largest wheelbase with 2760mm.
And then we travelled to Spain in April to sample the fourth iteration of Mercedes-Benz’s small-car range (we won’t even mention the lashing the B-Class received in its first test in June ’12) and were left impressed by Benz’s Audi Q3 opponent, the GLA crossover. It was tricky to assess the improvement in the ride quality on Spain’s smooth blacktop, but what we felt and heard was promising. What’s more, the cabin was roomier than that of the cramped A-Class and pricing initially seemed fair considering the range of improvements that had been made. This experience left us eager to discover whether the great showing in Spain would translate onto South Africa’s tricky road surfaces.
