BMW is recalling some 528i, 535i, 550i and M5 cars from model years 2008 through 2010 because increased resistance at the tail light electrical contact points may cause damage to the ground terminal and the housing of the connector, according to documents filed with the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. That could result in an intermittent or permanent loss of one or more rear lamp functions.

There’s a BMW 5 Series for every luxury buyer, no matter their needs. Whether consumers are after high-performance or high efficiency, the expansive 5 Series lineup may just have a model cut out for every buyer’s particular needs. While the wagon model isn’t offered in the U.S., the 5 Series comes in sedan and GT forms. The 5 Series GT is a large — and somewhat expensive — four-door hatchback that provides more interior space and cargo capacity than the regular 5 Series sedan.

Consumer investigator Jim Strickland found tens of thousands of BMW drivers are getting the warning. The company is conducting its second recall in six years because passenger airbags can shut down even when someone is in the seat. Certain 2006-2007 3 Series, 5 Series, 7 Series and X5s are affected. Liz Lambert, of Marietta, knows all too well how important airbags are. Someone ran a red light and hit her old BMW 10 years ago. Lambert's daughter was driving. “It was the deployment of the airbags that saved her from being seriously injured so straightaway we said we want the safety of BMW," said Lambert. Strickland drove slowly through her neighborhood in her 328i Thursday. During the interview, photographer Chuck Rakestraw sat in the passenger seat against the car company's advice. "When I go anywhere, I do not take a passenger They've advised me against it. That's a pain sometimes," said Lambert. Strickland and Rakestraw saw the warning lamps in the dash and overhead. The seat sensor is on the fritz and the lamps indicate the airbag is deactivated even when occupied. Lambert got her recall notice letter in January. The recall actually came out in November. "What they're telling me now is they don't have a part to replace it,” Lambert said. Drivers of 76,000 recalled cars are warned if the lamps are lit, it isn't safe to have company in the front seat. Strickland received an email from BMW blaming a delay in receiving parts. The company expects parts to become available later this month.
BMW notified the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration of the defect. They stated, however, that it happens only in rare cases. If there is a malfunction, the bolts holding the housing for the variable camshaft timing unit can become loosened or broken, causing the engine to go into "safe mode," thus lowering engine performance. When this happens, the "check engine" or "service engine soon" lights will turn on. Continued use of the car after the bolts give way, USA Today reports, will lead to the engine stalling.
A repair solution for vehicles already retailed is under development and not available at this time. Customers will initially be informed of the Recall in November by letter; and again when parts become available. Please do not contact the Parts Technical Group (PTG) requesting parts. The repair letter will be sent when the dealership has the necessary parts, tools and procedures to perform the repair.
