The gearbox is without a doubt one of the best manual units money can buy. Its throws, although a bit on the long side, are sniper rifle precise, with the forgiving learning curve of an air-powered pellet gun. The joy of this 394-hp V-8 can turn to suffering if seals fail inside the engine’s two double-VANOS variable-valve-timing units—which use oil pressure to change intake and exhaust cam timing. BMW’s solution is to swap the entire unit at more than $4500. It is cheaper to replace the seals instead of the entire VANOS unit, but you’ll have to use an independent shop because it’s not a BMW-approved procedure. Some owners claim the car is cursed by it while others say repairs are the cost of owning a semi-exotic.

"Bought the car with 69k miles (now has 91k) and it makes me smile every time I drive it. Good for twisty roads with it's LSD and perfect amount of under-steer at the limit. Very controllable once the rear end steps out.. can powerslide all day long. The variable valve timing kicks in at about 1700 rpm and then it pulls hard all the way through 7k. On a dry day with good tires, you can just barely get all the power down in 1st. Rear tires will be lucky to last 10k miles. Long highway cruises are fine even with the 18" rims. Gets 16-17 mpg average, with 24 mpg high doing 70 mph. I drive it in the winter too (in a place that gets 200+ in/year)... it handles very well with a set of winter tires and the LSD. Turning sport mode on sharpens up the throttle to the point where it's instantaneous. 3rd gear roll @ 60 mph will still slam you back into your seat. The brakes a good and the traction control and ABS work wonders. The car looks great, especially with the stock rims and quad exhausts. I get compliments everywhere I go. The 6 speed ratios are perfectly spaced, minus it could use a slightly higher overdrive (it's geared for it's top speed of ~190 mph). 2nd gear sometimes isn't as smooth as you would like when it's cold. There is a huge difference between this and a 540i or 740. The M badge isn't there just for show. All the components are better. The engine is the real deal."

Somewhat painful to see how these cars were setup to understeer from the factory, although safer for most drivers. Interesting to see how BMW tested everything back then and how they did it to uncover potential problems... Since nowadays technology allows more intense data logging, I guess/hope they do more intense testing today.
100% Stainless exhaust system The exhaust system for BMW E39 M5 5.0 V8 is composed by: manifold right - left "SUPERSPRINT DESIGN PATENT", front pipes with or without a metallic catalytic converter, a centre section "X" (non resonated), and the rear exhausts. The catalytic converter, as in the Supersprint tradition, is replaced by a HJS metallic unit with 100 cells per square inch. It's much more efficient and free-flowing but at the same time offers an optimal reduction of pollutant gas. If you're looking only for a more involving and sportier exhaust tone and don't want to replace the stock manifold and catalysts, the "cat-back" setup is recommended. It's composed by centre pipe "X" + rear exhausts. Following our very long tradition (est.1955), the main target is not to change the nature of the car, loosing comfort in the process, but to make the engine note more pleasant and distinctive, without being excessive, but even more important, to increase the performance. We still offer a louder, more aggressive setup for enthusiasts. The look is the perfect match of sportiness and class, with rear exhaust available with a quad pipes setups (90 mm, two for each side) perfectly integrated in the bumper line, for a sporty but still elegant result.

The M5 performance software was developed on the dyno to create maximum power and torque using premium 91+ octane fuel and revising the torque limiters in the ECU. The software makes changes to the ECU's maps and algorithms for fuel injection, ignition timing, VANOS and camshaft movement, and transitional fueling. We modify the maps for part throttle and full throttle so you get better response and more torque at all RPM. The stock software artificially limits torque output, especially in the first three gears. We raised the torque limiters in all gears so there is more torque available. You will see an immediate difference as soon as you leave your driveway! Choose between a stock 7,000 or raised 7,400 RPM rev limit. The top speed limiter is removed. By fine tuning these maps we've been able to improve the S62 engine beyond what BMW did by making more power and torque and a smoother-running engine.

The 1999 - 2003 US and Euro E39 M5 and Z8 (S62) uses a dual vanos for each bank of cylinders making it a fairly complex system. While the vanos units themselves are quite reliable and should last the life of the car in most cases, the solenoids can cause various problems which can be mistaken for a vanos failure. The cat-back package for the E39 BMW M5 is made up of three sections that slot together simply yet with millimetric precision: a Y-piece to collect the spent gases from each cylinder bank, and two separate silencers for each side of the vehicle. The system is constructed from an optimal pipe diameter of 63.5mm (2.5") and is mandrel-bent and flow-tested to ensure that nothing impedes the evacuating gases. Two pairs of 90mm jet-type tailpipes provide a visual flourish at the exit as well as beautiful amplification of the BMW's Motorsport-tuned V8.

My M5 was poorly backed in to a spot, showing it s age with the pre-facelifted E39 headlights, a gaudy front license plate, and more than a handful of stone chips in the hood and front bumper. BMW launched the third generation M5 at the 1998 Geneva Motor Show. Aimed to challenge the new Jaguar XJR and Mercedes-Benz W210 E55 on the premium-sport sector, the new M5 showed up with a newly-developed 4.9L V8 engine delivering 400 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. Throughout its 6 years of production, the M5 received several new features (on a year-to-year basis) including revised headlight-design, new front bumper or rear-head airbags. When launched, the new BMW M5 was the powerful 4-door saloon car in the world, scoring an impressive 5.3 seconds on the 0-60 mph sprint and topping 178 mph (although it was electronically limited to 155 mph).

The UK, European and South African versions all used the M88/3 engine, producing 282 hp. Here is a BMW M5 E39, im not sure when it was made and the description that came with it said it was made by Edis145, Grudas also mentioned that it was from kietekas.com. As far as i know its compatible with 2.2.1 mwm, didnt test for LE. Works with le2mwm. I have no way to contact the author, so im posting this here to share, if the owner comes by and says he doesnt want to share then we will have to take it out, its a nice car for who might like it even if its not like the ultra supa dupa mods that get released nowadays. Has stock bumpers and M5 ones. the sunroof window isnt correctly positioned tho.

The E39 M5 Super Duty Cooling Kit The alloy fan shroud and electric fan work in concert to provide maximum cooling efficiency by pulling 2070 cfm through the radiator core - even while sitting still if required by engine temperature. Simply hanging a fan on a core is inefficient as airflow must be directed through the entire core area, not just directly in front of the fan. The latter approach limits the effectiveness of the core. Essentially, it reduces the core size to the diameter of the fan. Not to mention the fact that hanging a fan through the core will eventually fatigue the cooling tubes and lead to failure.
