Much like the E46 M3, the E36 comes from a time when BMWs were known for incredibly precise and communicative steering and purity of driving. The E36 M3 is a cult hero to many BMW enthusiasts. With a free revving inline-six engine, 5-Speed manual, a limited-slip diff and rear-wheel drive all for under 10k (and in some cases under 5k), the E36 is one helluva deal. So let s go through a few reasons why someone should buy the E36 M3.
The '15 M3 comes with 425 hp. Turbos are becoming more commonplace. So a naturally aspirated straight-six making 240 hp might be thought of as old hat. But not if it's under the hood of an E36 M3. This car is a supporting wall in the house that BMW built. A house that stands for rear-drive dynamics, autobahn-blasting, and unarguable automotive class. And anyway, unless you're a track-day fiend, isn't it more fun to get close to the limits of a car like this than have something way more powerful and never get the chance to really stretch its metaphorical legs?
Their cars are unique in that they're perfectly poised to give you the precision to drive circles around and stop on a dime, and leave enough money in your pocket that you wouldn't need to get out of your car to pick up said dime. All cars throughout their range were equally guilty of this not-so-hidden ability to convert a freeway on-ramp into an instant ear-to-ear grin, although some models were less equal than others.
After reading about that E30 that sold for $58K this morning, I'm curious about whether you guys think the E36 M3 will ever hit the same heights. I could easily see the E46 becoming collectable in the future (last strictly 2 door, naturally aspirated straight 6) and even the E90, given enough time (only M3 with a V8, probably the last naturally aspirated "analog" M3). But it seems like the E36 isn't viewed in the same light by enthusiasts.
The first M3 was based on the E30 3-Series platform and was introduced to Europe in 1986 and a year later to the United States. It staid into production until 1990 and was offered with a variety of motors, including a 238 bhp engine. In a relatively short amount of time, the E30 M3 scored thousands of victories becoming one of the most successful touring machines in history. It had under the hood a 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine with twin-cam four-valve head, with Bosch fuel-injection and rated at 192 horsepower. The only 2850 pound vehicle with five-speed manual transmission could go from zero-to-sixty mph in less than seven seconds peaking a top speed of 140 mph.
"Even with the horsepower hobbled (compared to the Euro engine), the USA E36 BMW M3 is a special car. It does everything well. The handling is superb, driving dynamics spot on, and overall weight is reasonable. For track days, ditch the heavy Vaders for real sport seats, Koni's, sticky tires and the car is ready to rip. The handling is so good that 240 hp goes a long ways. A Euro 321 hp would be unreal. The USA engine still has good grunt, power everywhere with good low end torque, and always willing to rev to redline. The overall gearing is short, and the car revs quite high at highway speed. The gearing works well at the track however. When looking for used get the best you can afford, and have the cooling system checked!"
** Updated 06/07/2015 ** The E36 M3 as well as the 3-series boasts an unmistakable presence on and off the road in things such as car shows, BMW Car Club events, and at almost all track events throughout the United States, Canada and Europe. Turner Motorsport formed its identity as a successful BMW race team and tuner around the E36's performance and styling on and off the track. It has also served as a means to sustain Turner's success, expertise and engineering from the racetrack to the street.
Sometime back, the staff at Grassroots Magazine came to Active Autowerke with a BMW 235i in quest of making more power. With the 235i strapped on the dyno, this BMW measured 292 wheel horsepower in stock form. With the flip of By Pass Plug, this BMW 235i got 346 wheel horsepower with just the Active 8 Piggy Back installed. That's 54 ++ more HP at the rear wheels with a simple DIY bolt on. M Power and...? This is the 1996 3.2l 321hp (S52B32) version and the 286hp/321hp version are not Germany only they are sold world wide, only the USA recived the 240hp e36 fake M3 and never the true e36 M3... Both US version of the M3 with the S50USB30 and S52USB32 only had 240hp the only different is slightly increased torque from 305 to 320Nm, both engines were based on the M50 and M52 engine of the 325i and 328i and never on the real M3 engine the S50B30 and S52B32

Toutes en sobriete, les quelques touches de sportivite ajoutees a la plus rapide des Series 3 E36 n'entament pas son elegance naturelle, notamment en version Coupe qui represente le gros des ventes de la M3. Comment distingue-t-on une M3 E36 3.2 d'une 3.0 ? Voila en fait une question piege, car bon nombre d'exemplaires ne sont plus en configuration d'origine. Nous avons pu nous en rendre compte en cherchant notre "modele photo" pour illustrer cet essai. Neanmoins, ce qu'il faut savoir de facon certaine c'est que le coupe M3 3.2 chausse d'origine des jantes inedites bien que leur dessin soit tres proche des precedentes. Les "M Double Spoke II" (style 39) de la 3.2L fournies en serie sont reconnaissables a leurs 10 double branches plus epaisses mais surtout, elles sont depourvues du moulage "BMW Motorsport" sur la partie centrale qui est aussi plus creusee. Les jantes forgees retsaient cependant en option pour le coupe. La grille de bouclier avant est egalement noire sur toutes les versions (coupe, cabriolet berline). Enfin, dernier point notable, les feux arriere deviennent bicolores blanc/rouge et les clignotants avant et repetiteurs lateraux sont blancs.

BMW initially launched the second generation at the 1992 Paris Motor Show, presenting the new model only in a coupe body style. Later on, in 1994, the German manufacturer extended its M3 range with the introduction of both convertible/cabriolet and saloon/sedan versions. The 4-door saloon M3 was initially available with a 3.0L straight-6 engine delivering 286 hp that was later updated to a 320-hp 3.2L unit (1995). The same year, the M3 saloon featured new wheels and a revised 6-speed manual transmission. This model was discontinued in 1998, being followed by both the coupe and cabriolet variants a year later.

The M3 is the wunderkind of the 3 series, and has been the performance standard in sport coupes for almost 30 years. The first M3 was built to homologate the BMW 3 series for Group A Touring Car racing in Europe based on the E30 2 door coupe, and included aerodynamic body panels as well as upgraded suspension and engine components. It was distinctive with its integrated rear spoiler, larger wheels and special colors. 17,184 M3's were built from 1986 to 1991. The 4 cylinder M3 produced 197 hp, up 94 hp over the standard 318i.
The M3 is a rear wheel drive coupé road car with a front placed engine, sold by BMW. The BMW M3 is one of the E36 model family from BMW. It's powered courtesy of a naturally aspirated engine of 3 litre capacity. This unit features double overhead camshaft valve gear, 6 cylinder layout, and 4 valves per cylinder. It has an output of 281.6 bhp (286 PS/210 kW) of power at 7000 rpm, and maximum torque of 320 N·m (236 lb·ft/32.6 kgm) at 3600 rpm. A 5 speed manual 'box transfers the power to the wheels. Having a claimed kerb weight of 1460 kg, the BMW M3 manages to cover the 0-100 km/h sprint in 6 seconds and the standing kilometre in 25.6 seconds. Maximum speed claimed is 250 km/h (155 mph), claimed fuel consumption is 6.5/7.9/13.0 l/100km 90 km/h / 120 km/h / Urban DIN.

So it was finally time to trade up for some new wheels for my E36 M3. The choice has been years in the making bouncing around from ideas with BBS, Apex, Forgeline, CCW and many many more. I knew I wanted something different but also something that fits well with the now somewhat dated body lines and look of the E36 M3. Obviously style 5s came to mind but they were not unique enough, style 5s are a common wheel choice of many BMW enthusiasts from E30 to E90.
