The BMW i8 features a turbocharged three-cylinder engine and an electric motor that generate a total of 357 horsepower. The electric motor is paired with a two-speed automatic transmission that sends power to the front wheels, while the gasoline engine is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission that drives the rear wheels. BMW says that the i8 has a top speed of 155 mph, and that it can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 4.2 seconds. When running on gasoline, the i8 gets an EPA-estimated 28/29 mpg city/highway. The i8 gets 76 mpg-equivalent on electric power and it has an electric-only range of 15 miles when the battery is fully charged. The BMW i8 seats four and has 5.4 cubic feet of cargo space. Inside you'll find standard features like power-adjustable heated front seats, leather upholstery, navigation, Bluetooth, a USB port, a Harman Kardon audio system and BMW's iDrive infotainment system with a 10.2-inch display. Among the plug-in hybrid's numerous accolades and awards, the World Car of the Year organization awarded the i8 the 2015 World Green Car award. The i8 was also Green Car Journal's 2015 Luxury Green Car of the Year and Top Gear Magazine gave the i8 its Car of the Year award in 2014.
A turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder gasoline engine (228 hp and 236 lb-ft of torque) provides primary propulsion, driving the rear wheels via a six-speed automatic gearbox. The front electric motor (129 hp and 184 lb-ft) is mounted in the front axle assembly and drives the front wheels through a two-speed automatic gearbox. A smaller rear electric motor (13 hp and 81 lb-ft) provides additional drive to the rear wheels but mostly acts as a generator to top off the battery and as an alternator to collect kinetic energy during braking and trailing throttle. BMW quotes a combined 357 hp and a 420 lb-ft combined torque peak. The car can be recharged in two hours on high voltage.
The BMW i8 is powered by a 1.5-litre three-cylinder twin scroll turbo engine that produces 231bhp and 320Nm of torque. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a six-speed AT. The front wheels are connected to an electric motor via a two-stage AT box. This motor produces the equivalent of 131bhp and is mated to a 5kWh lithium-ion battery. This combination takes the total output to 362bhp and 570Nm of torque allowing the i8 to do 0-100kmph in 4.4 seconds.
. Its carbon fiber and aluminum shell is home to a mid-mounted turbocharged gasoline engine and an electric drive system that delivers 357 horsepower and an all-electric range of up to 22 miles. Then again, a $136,000 starting price means this next-generation driving experience doesn't come cheap. And while you could purchase two Cadillac ELRs for that kind of money, the i8's price tag still falls roughly in line with its other plug-in hybrid rival, the
The 2016 BMW i8 coupe has indeed taken the BMW s Vision Efficient Dynamics Concept far ever since the concept was unveiled back in 2009. Meanwhile, the concept has changed its name into i8 heading into a mass production with a view of cornering a significant portion of exotic/supercar market with a model which excels in powertrain performance and driving abilities as well as outstanding style and contemporary design.
The i8 comes to the U.S. next spring as a plug-in hybrid with a carbon-fiber body and electric/gas powerplant that will allow it to rocket from zero to 62 miles per hour in 4.4 seconds. Its performance is accomplished with only a wall plug or use of a 1.5-liter, three-cylinder engine producing 231 horsepower. With the addition of its electric motors powered by its lithium-ion batteries, it has 362 total horsepower, BMW says.
It has been brought to our attention that several individuals posing as legitimate lease buyers have been contacting consumers selling vehicles via online listing services, including Swapalease.com, on a fraudulent basis. As it applies to lease transfers, they are essentially writing their own lease transfer contracts, as opposed to the proper way of transferring a lease under the supervision of the leasing company. In fact, this method of transferring one's lease ('subleasing') is often a breach of contract and may be illegal.

While these qualities are not unusual in the nascent hybrid sports car segment—Ferrari, McLaren and Porsche all have brand-new models that meet the same criteria—the BMW i8 costs about $700,000 less than the next expensive entry. It’s going to seem beyond ridiculous to describe a $145,000 sports car as being a great value—until you consider all the advances working their magic under the shapely skin of this particular sports car.

The anticipation is over as the all-wheel drive BMW i8 sports car and its full details were released today at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show in Germany. Unique to every other production vehicle the brand built previously, the 4-seater i8 coupe combines performance with the latest plug-in hybrid technology in a package that will be available in the Untied States in the spring of 2014. It carries an MSRP of $135700. BMW is calling it, “the world’s most forward-looking sports car.”
I disagree. Yes, for 2014 this car will be VERY hard to get if you haven't already nailed down an early allocation. 2014 allocations are small. But... I believe (and this is based on years of BMW observation, NOT on any actual data, so take it with a grain of salt)... 2015 i8s will be as easy to get as getting a 2015 M3/4. Yes, the demand is very high, but production will be high as well. If you want one, you can find one. Some dealers might get more than MSRP, but most will be selling at MSRP. None will last long on the lot... unless there is a huge dealer markup... those will gather some dust. 2016 i8s will be as easy to get as an M6. That is, there will always be one or two sitting on your dealer's lot, waiting for you. Demand will still be there, but I'll bet you can even bargain a little. This isn't a Supercar. It isn't even BMW's most expensive vehicle. This is a car the BMW will want out there as a sign of their i-future. Therefore they will want lots of them out there. They are still very expensive, as is the 760iL, and the M6 (in all three variants) This is not going to be an artificially limited production car like the Z8 was. This is my prediction. I've been wrong before. And I want an i8 badly... but I predict I'll be able to get one for MSRP in six to nine months from now.
But reaching 60 mph in 4.4 seconds is the least of the i8's tricks. According to BMW, the plug-in exotic will return an estimated 94 miles per gallon -- a figure once reserved for tiny hatchbacks with electric drivetrains. The i8 also uses a Driving Experience Control switch to allow drivers to choose between Sport, Eco, Pro or Comfort settings. A fifth eDrive setting allows the i8 to travel up to 22 miles on electric power alone.
After a blown fuse on one of two fuel pumps in my 740iL became a you need a $7,500 engine rebuild I decided that I had had it with BMW s. While a 23 mile limit to electric range would get me half way to the dealer, I fear that the battery issues will make this a very expensive gee whiz man toy. The design is marginal at best and the carbon fiber, retro clamshell doors, short life of incredibly expensive batteries, and sub-Tesla performance, this isn t the must have automobile that designed scarcity has made it 3 times the current non-dealer selling price. I ll take a M4 and have a lot of Cash left for some other toy.
or a six-speed manual transmission. Fuel utilization for 2016 Jeep Compass with a full tank can be more than 400 miles or 30 mpg. For the second motor is an inline-four motor s 2.4-liter delivering 172 pull and 165 lb-ft of torque. There will be no manual transmission. Fuel utilization will achieve 28 mpg on the roadway. It is fascinating to realize that the client can pick between the front wheels as standard to offer and all-wheel drive is discretionary, however you need to pay additional.
price reached $ 140,000, and many more are more expensive and inexpensive. The more complete the more expensive car prices also. The speed is fast enough when driving this car, until it reaches 200 km / h and 120 km / h, and it all depends on the driver whether he wants his speeding or otherwise. Fuel can use you right there is also a premium and power utilities. From year to year cars in the world is increasing its quality. Should the car carefully choose when the time of purchase, and must be equipped with regular maintenance in order to keep the car itself and comfort when driving.

After the two concepts ( as Coupe and Spyder ) highly anticipated series BMW i8 saw the light of day at this year s Frankfurt Motor Show. This plug -in hybrid with a centrally mounted engine in the other car i line of electric vehicle of German car manufacturer after the i3, but introduces several innovations such as the shell made of carbon fiber mounted on an aluminum chassis. Consumption numbers are also impressive. The i8 consumes just 2.5 liters per 100 kilometers, with CO2 emissions of just 25 g / km. If you are using only the electric motor, i8 is able to cross the 35 miles between charges.
can rocket from 0 to 60mph in 4.5 seconds and reach a top speed of 155mph. The interior uses recycled materials and naturally treated leather, and it's easily one of the sexiest-looking production cars available. While the i8's scissor-lift-style doors are cool, they also make it difficult to get in and out, and the tiny rear seats are more for storage than passengers. Still, for a car that looks this good and gets this fast, those are minor quibbles. The 2015 BMW i8 is a world-class hybrid sports car well worthy of our Editors' Choice.
Update [December 31, 2014]: Since this article still gets a lot of traffic, rather than create an entirely new article for 2015, I m simply changing this 2014 list to a 2015 list. Also, as I have done in the past year, I will update the info here when new cars or data arrive. In case it is helpful to anyone, I will also start putting updates on the bottom of this page to note when and where I made changes. Thanks to everyone who has helped to make this page as useful as it is, and thanks to everyone who does so in the future!
2015 BMW i8 will have a lighter body weight. The material is equipped with an aluminum chassis and carbon fiber reinforced plastics will provide a better view than the previous model. The company first unveiled the i8 Spyder in 2012, following the original i8 concept's introduction at the 2011 Frankfurt Auto Show. It was the first i8 concept to allow a closer look at the final production car's styling, without the unique glass doors of previous concepts. It's expected that many of the Spyder concept's styling details will make it through to the final production version, such as the clearly defined tonneau humps behind the driver and passenger. However, much of the car's styling will be a straight port from the production coupe.
The BMW i8, on the other hand, is a jaw-dropping exercise in futurism, with bird-wing doors that rise up from the windshield pillars to let two occupants drop as gracefully as possible into their form-fitting seats. Its characteristic BMW twin-kidney grille is actually a pair of blanking plates, and its silver and blue accent coloring denotes that it's a member of the BMW 'i' family of plug-in electric cars.

Thus it was that the first BMW i8 owner was a true car enthusiast who knew from the moment he saw the original concept that he had to have that car. Dirk Schulz, who also owns one of the very first BMW Z1s, was the first in line for the BMW i8 plug-in hybrid superca after waiting nearly four years. A lifelong car enthusiast, Schulz went to a nearby BMW dealership to put his name down for a vehicle that existed only in concept form, before it was even known what sort of drivetrain it would get. For four years he has patiently waited for the i8, and if you recall all sorts of rumors were flying around, from big V10 engines to
SANTA MONICA, USA - Two years ago Carsten Breitfeld was belting around a private test track in an early prototype of the BMW i8. The burly, plain-talking head of BMW’s project to build a sportscar for the 21st Century was apparently going like gangbusters. Naturally, this led the colleague sitting next to him at the time to remark upon how fast the car felt, in spite of its concept as an eco-coupe. “On the contrary,” replied Breitfeld. “This car is fast because of its concept, not in spite of it.” Two years later and it’s CarBuyer ’s turn to have a go. But where to start with the BMW i8? Nearly all cars are simply made of steel and powered by an engine, but the futuristic i8 takes that recipe and rips it to pieces. Instead, the BMW has a body made of carbon, an aluminium skeleton and plastic skin. That reduces weight dramatically, so it can have two separate propulsion sources without being an elephant. Even its nuts and bolts eschew steel for aluminium, to save precious kilos.

The i8 is BMW's expensive sleek futuristic plug-in hybrid supercar. The car is powered in a one-two punch by a powerful 96-kilowatt (129-horsepower) electric motor driving the front wheels—and an efficient 230-horsepower 1.5-liter turbocharged three-cylinder gasoline engine motivating the rear wheels. The car has a delightful split personality: switching on command between virtuous EV silence, and a delightful Porsche-like engine note when driven as a sports machine.
