Efficient Drivetrain Power comes from a hybrid drivetrain consisting of a 231-horsepower turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine located behind the seats and a 131-horsepower electric motor mounted on the front axle. The gas-burning engine sends power to the rear wheels via a six-speed automatic transmission, while the electric motor spins the front wheels through a two-stage automatic gearbox.
concept at last year's Los Angeles Auto Show, the production version of the high-performance hybrid plug-in has arrived for the 2014 model year, bowing this week at the City of Angels' 2013 show. The sleek 2014 i8 coupe with gull-wing doors is expected to reach showrooms by spring with a starting price of $135,700, not including destination charge or any state or federal incentives for which the high-mileage i8 may qualify. The all-wheel-drive 2+2 seater uses BMW's first plug-in hybrid powertrain: a turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder teamed with an electric motor and a high-voltage lithium-ion battery, and mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. The combined gas-and-electric output is 362 horsepower and 420 pounds-feet of torque — good for a zero-to-62 mph time of 4.4 seconds and estimated fuel economy of 94 mpg.

BMW i8 uses a plug-in hybrid system consisting of a turbocharged three-cylinder BMW TwinPower Turbo petrol engine and BMW eDrive technology in the form of an electric drive system. The 1.5-liter combustion engine develops 170 kW/231 hp and drives the rear wheels of the BMW i8, while the 96 kW/131 hp electric drive sends its power to the front wheels and allows an all-electric range of up to 35 kilometers (22 miles) and a top speed of 120 km/h (75 mph).
One of the great things about going to auto shows is the bags of swag you get to take home. Most of the time, the swag is a throw-away USB drive, but sometimes it s a bit better. In the case of the BMW display at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show, we got a great little hardcover book covering all the new releases and cleverly incorporating a USB drive bookmark loaded with high-quality pictures of their new releases- including our favorite new super car,
The 911 Turbo is the link pin between the two extremes. It has the twin-turbo impact of the AMG, but the four-seat cabin and four-wheel-drive security of the BMW. That’s probably forcing the issue a bit - the Porsche is more aligned with the Mercedes, a 513bhp motor designed specifically to get itself down a road as efficiently and rapidly as physics permits. As far as price, performance and capability go, this is the benchmark Mercedes must have had in mind.

The BMW i8 was first introduced as the Concept Vision Efficient Dynamics plug-in hybrid back in 2009 at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Now, 4 years later, BMW has just unveiled the stunning production version of the i8 plug-in hybrid supercar. The BMW prototype had a 7.2 kWh battery pack, but the production version only has a 5.5 kWh battery pack - likely in an effort to keep down weight, or because more space couldn t be found to house the bulky battery pack.
The i8 offers a peek at the future of driving – a future that’s packed with plenty of computing power to go along with the i8’s ample horsepower. This is where we come in. We’ve come a long way since our first GPU appeared in a car back in 2007. The BMW i8 is the latest in a string of new vehicle introductions this year that have helped us hit the milestone of six million NVIDIA-powered cars on the road.
When Gooding & Company dropped the gavel for the final time on the i8 on Saturday evening, it rung up an US$825,000 price. BMW calls that price record-breaking, but the record is merely for the highest price of an auctioned i8, so not exactly a monumental shake-up of the books. The proceeds from the sale are going to the Pebble Beach Company Foundation, which raises funds for Monterey County youth and distributes arts, athletics, environmental sciences, educational and community grants.
Plug-in hybrid system developed and produced by the BMW Group represents the latest development stage of Efficient Dynamics; debut for three-cylinder petrol engine wîth BMW TwinPower Turbo technology, displacement: 1.5 litres, output: 170 kW/231 hp, maximum torque: 320 Nm (236 lb-ft); power sent to the rear wheels via a six-speed automatic gearbox; model-specific hybrid synchronous electric motor, output: 96 kW/131 hp, maximum torque: 250 Nm (184 lb-ft); power channelled through the front wheels via a two-stage automatic transmission; lithium-ion high-voltage battery wîth liquid cooling and usable capacity of 5 kWh. Combination of BMW TwinPower Turbo and BMW eDrive technology plus intelligent energy management produce system output of 266 kW/362 hp (max. torque: 570 Nm / 420 lb-ft) and give the BMW i8 the performance characteristics of a pure-bred sports car (0 – 100 km/h / 62 mph in 4.4 seconds) combined wîth fuel economy and emissions figures more familiar from a small car (EÚ fuel consumption: 2.5 litres per 100 km / 113 mpg imp); glued-to-the-road AWD driving experience wîth torque distribution geared towards optimised dynamics.
The BMW i8 is ready to revolutionise its vehicle class. As the first sports car with the consumption and emission values of a compact car. The strength of the plug-in hybrid lies, among other factors, in the perfect synchronisation of electric motor and combustion engine, which makes itself apparent in maximum efficiency and dynamics on the road. The first sports car that even accelerates the zeitgeist.
From Thursday to Saturday BMWi organized the Launch Event of the Pure Impulse program in Leipzig (Germany). (Don't like reading? Pictures are below!) The event consisted of 1 'walking' dinner Thursday evening in a 2 Michelin star Restaurant/Bar on the top floor of the Westin Hotel in Leipzig where you could meet other early i8 adopters and the BMW team behind the i program in a casual setting. Friday we went on a factory tour in the Leipzig plant where the i3 and i8 are build, you could literally touch the i8s that were being put together since they let us on the factory floor. We were told it was quite exceptional and it also felt special being so close to the birth of the i8s. They explained and showed every detail of the process to us from the carbon production to the 'mating' of the life cell and other components, very impressive! Friday evening they organized a gala dinner in the once largest wool spinning plant in the world, during the dinner all main characters involved in the process from concept to production of the current i8 told us about all the work involved getting the car together, it made me loving the car even more if you know how much they had to do to get the car the way it is now. Again we were able to talk with the members of the BMW i team and I happend to sit on the same table with Dr. Ulrich Kranz who is the Senior Vice President of BMWi so I had a very nice evening talking about all the ins-and-outs of the car and some upcoming models
So, you don t even have to feel too guilty about destroying the environment in one of these stunning vehicles, because as you use your breaks to slow the car down you ll actually be recharging the battery, and you can also plug the car in at home. So, you could probably manage to do a lot of local errands without ever having to pollute the atmosphere. But let s be honest, hybrids were never so cool, until the i8 came along.
It's not every day that you can hop down to your favorite car dealer and drive home in a concept car, but BMW is making that possible with the introduction of the new 2014 i8 sports coupe. While it doesn't look exactly like the 2011 EfficientDynamics coupe concept on which it is based, the second vehicle in BMW's eco-friendly "i" lineup is just about as close as one can get to the original vision while still maintaining crash-safety standards and everyday usability.
The CFRP passenger cell makes its way from the body shop to the assembly where, on the BMW i8 assembly line, its customer-specific equipment is fitted. At the same time, the engine components are pre-assembled on the drivetrain line. This is the final step before the ‘marriage’, during which the CFRP passenger cell and the aluminum chassis are bonded together. The two units are also bolted together at four points. The result is optimal stiffness and strength. Only then is the BMW i8 given its final exterior skin.

As far as internal combustion goes, there are only three cylinders with a displacement of 1.5 liters. They’re force-fed by a wee turbocharger to help provide the wing-door sports car’s forward propulsion to the tune of 228 horsepower. There’s 8 hp of assist from a little helper motor/generator/starter hanging off the side of the engine to make up for the times when the turbo isn’t producing full boost. There’s also a big electric motor up front good for 129 hp to drive the front wheels. The front and rear wheels are not mechanically connected, so it’s up to clever programming to combine the front end’s two-speed transmission to the rear’s six-speed automatic. Combined, the two ends churn out 357 peak hp. As for torque, that’s always tricky to calculate in hybrids. BMW says peak is 420 lb-ft. Which is wrong, as the gas engine, the same engine in the new
There are the details that you might normally miss at first glance, like the relatively skinny tyres, the lack of any visible exhaust pipes and the fact that when you start it there s no blare of intoxicatingly obnoxious revs it s completely silent and remains so as you start to move. Then, too, consider that it s entirely capable of returning fuel economy to the tune of 2.1L per 100 kilometres and, if you only ever use it for shortish commuting to and from the office (no more than 37km per day), your tank of fuel could last a lifetime.
