A third mode called Eco Pro is best for eking as many miles as possible from both the battery and petrol tank – but it shuts down the air conditioning to do this, and when it is 28C outside, I'm happy to burn more petrol. The unusual drive system is easy to get used to, but the i8’s interior is not. Its combination of scissors-style doors, a very low roof and extremely wide carbon-fiber sills make entry feel like a beginner’s lesson in limbo dancing, but less fun. The sill is so wide, and the seats so low, that I found the easiest exit route to be levering myself up onto the sill and sliding across it. The rear seat is barely worth mentioning, more a leather upholstered package shelf than passenger space. Cargo space is a mere 4.7 cubic feet, barely more than a 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata. Pack light.
The dashboard wraps around the driver almost like a fighter jet, and you sit very low down in the car. There are plenty of blue accents around the dashboard which are the colour of BMW’s ‘i’ electric-car brand. The climate control and main stereo panel are the same as in other BMWs, and you also get the brand’s iDrive system, which uses a rotary dial to control functions like the sat nav and stereo.
According to a memo about allocations, they plan for a 90/10 split between the PI package and the "Tera" package which includes a brown interior. At the time of writing this, they are likely to get that 90% uptake because it's currently the only way you can enter an i8 order into the system. The "Giga World" interior trim ($2,000) gives you a choice of black or white leather interiors, but doesn't appear in the system. The "Tera World" interior trim ($3,000) is in the system but is currently un-selectable (and will likely remain that way until the 90% PI orders are locked in). So for all intents and purposes, the base MSRP of the BMW i8 is $146,500 (still less than a fully loaded M6 GC).

While it looks like the 2+2 with a buzz cut, the two-seat Spyder incorporates significant, and likely production-spec, changes. Overall length is 6 inches shorter (176.3 inches) and it’s about an inch skinnier (75.6 inches) than the i8 coupe. At 50.3 inches in height, it’s nearly 3 inches shorter, and the wheelbase is 6 inches shorter, at 104.3 inches. Greater structural rigidity adds about 300 pounds over the Coupe’s 3200 pounds, which hurts fuel efficiency by the slightest of margins.

ALPINA also has all of the tools to make one of the best sports cars on the road today even better. Knowing the kind of work ALPINA does, I’m assuming it’d keep a similar powertrain, but either up the power on the 1.5 liter three-cylinder or swap it for a BMW 2.0 liter, if the packaging allows. When the first images of the BMW Efficient Dynamics concept started making the rounds it was hard to believe such a car would ever make it through to production. Its sexy yet outlandish curves, futuristic lighting configuration and articulating doors made for a glorious design exercise, but little did we know the i8 would be gracing the streets a mere five years later. From every angle the new i8 is absolutely stunning, and shy of the loss of the glass doors, and a few other design tweaks, it looks just as futuristic as the concept from which it was born.
